How to update Minecraft on Nintendo Switch

The Nintendo Switch has been doing exceptionally well as a console. It’s been one of the most popular items to buy during past holiday seasons. New versions of the console have been released and lots of popular game titles are available for it, not least of which is Minecraft.

Minecraft on Nintendo Switch

Minecraft is available on Nintendo Switch. It’s been updated and the newest version of Minecraft for Nintendo Switch runs on the Bedrock engine. This allows for cross-play to work on the game. If you’re playing Minecraft on the Nintendo Switch, you can play online with friends who are on a Windows 10 PC or an Xbox.

Minecraft for the Switch gets regular updates. New items, maps, biomes, mobs that are released for the PC (Java or Bedrock) version are also available on the Switch. The roll out may take a little longer but once it’s available, all you have to do is update the game on the console.

Update Minecraft on Switch

Games on the Nintendo Switch are updated online. This means that you must have an active internet connection when you check for and download an update for a game. Minecraft is no different.

  1. Open the eShop on the Nintendo Switch.
  2. Search for Minecraft.
  3. If an update is available, you’ll be able to download it from the game page.

Minecraft tends to check for and update in the background. You should first open the game and check to see if there’s a prompt for the update. If there is, select it and the game will be updated.

Manual update

You can manually update Minecraft if it doesn’t update automatically.

  1. Select Minecraft on the Switch home screen.
  2. Press the plus button on the controller.
  3. Select the Software update option.
  4. Select Via the internet.
  5. The console will check for, download, and install available updates.

The size of the update may be small or large. It depends on what is being added to the game. For the Nintendo Switch, the changelog will reflect that of the Minecraft Bedrock version. It runs on the same engine and will get the same features.

At present, the latest version of Minecraft on Nintendo Switch is 1.18.2. This is the Cliffs and Caves Part 2 update. The update is available globally and is not regionally restricted.

Conclusion

Minecraft on the Switch supports cross-play. If you often play with friends who play on different platforms, it is generally a good idea to keep the game up to date. Minecraft on Switch gets updates slightly later than the desktop version but it is still robustly supported which means any and all features that are announced for the game will arrive on the Switch as well.
