How to fix PUBG lagging after installation
PUBG is an online game; players from all over the world connect to the server that is closed to them and join other players in a game. The reason players join the nearest available server is to reduce ping, and in turn reduce lag. With online games like PUBG, lag can be the difference between a great game and instant death.
Fix PUBG lagging after installation
PUBG can lag for two reasons; a poor internet connection or graphics settings that are too high for the hardware on your system to handle. regardless, there are a few things you can do to fix the problem.
Check graphics settings
PUBG requires at least a mid-tier system to run. Check out the minimum hardware requirements for the game on Steam. Take note of if you system doesn’t match the requirements, or only just meets them.
- Open PUBG.
- Go to the game’s settings.
- Select Graphics.
- Reduce the graphics to their lowest settings.
- Set Shadows to low
- Set Post processing to low
- Set texture to medium or low
- Turn Vsync and motion blur off
- Set the resolution to your monitor’s native resolution
- Reduce the FOV
- Reduce the FPS limit (PUBG really isn’t the kind of game you need 60FPS in)
- Quit and restart the game.
Check server ping
The closest regional server in PUBG may not necessarily give you the best ping. You can see the ping that you’re getting and change to a server that has better ping. Better ping means little or no lag.
- Open PUBG.
- Go to Settings.
- Click ‘Select Server’.
- Check which server has the lowest ping and select it.
Disable VPN
If you’re using a VPN to play PUBG (for whatever reason), disable it. PUBG may think the VPN is a cheat tool and it may degrade the gameplay or it may block you completely. The VPN may not be the right kind for gaming. Disable it and then try playing the game.
Check network ping
Your own internet connection should not have high ping. If it does, you need to sort this out with your ISP. A low ping is key to a smooth gaming experience.
- Visit Speedtest.net.
- Run a complete speed test.
- The ping should be in the low double-digits.
If your ping is high, ask your ISP about how you can optimize it. At the same time, you should know that your connection speed will also impact gameplay. If you have one too many users on the same connection, and it isn’t a fast one, gameplay will suffer. Try playing outside peak hours or upgrade your connection.
Disable overlay apps
If you’re running overlay apps e.g. Discord, Nvidia’s ShadowPlay, or OBS, to record the game, it may be causing lag in the game. Disable these apps and try to run the game. You should free up as many system resources as possible, especially if your hardware isn’t the best.
Conclusion
Make sure your system is set up so that it doesn’t overheat. Make sure your graphics drivers are up to date, and that you do not have pending updates to install on a Windows 10 system. Additionally, if Steam is pending a restart after an update, go ahead and restart it as well.
