Fix for iTunes Invalid Signature Detected on Windows 10

If you use an iPhone and you do not own a Mac, you will need iTunes. iTunes syncs media files to an iPhone and backs it up so it’s hard to avoid using the app.

iTunes is a sluggish app and has been abandoned on macOS. Windows 10 users still have to deal with it and sometimes, installing and running the app alone is a problem.

iTunes has an invalid signature

When you install iTunes, you may see the ‘iTunes has invalid signature ‘ error. This error prevents the app from being installed.

The ‘iTunes has invalid signature’ basically means that the app’s publisher cannot be verified via a digital signature. This may be because there’s a problem with the app installer that you’ve downloaded. This problem may also appear if you’re trying to update iTunes.

Invalid Signature Detected (FIX)

Here are a few things you can try to fix the error.

1. Download the installer again

If you ran into this error when you were trying to install iTunes for the first time, delete the installer from your system. Download the installer again from the official Apple website. Do not download the installer from other sources as it may be corrupt or bundled with malicious scripts.

2. Install iTunes from the Microsoft Store

The iTunes executable file that is available for download on Windows 10 installs iTunes as a desktop app. If the executable from the official website doesn’t work, install the UWP iTunes app from the Microsoft Store.

  1. Visit this link in your browser.
  2. When prompted to, click the ‘Open Microsoft Store’ button.
  3. Click Get, and then Install.
  4. iTunes will be installed from the Microsoft Store where signature problems do not occur.

3. Fix problems with Apple update service

Apple’s update service is responsible for downloading and installing a new iTunes update. If there is a problem with it, it can cause the update to fail.

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Go to Programs>Uninstall a program.
  3. Look for Apple Update Service.
  4. Select it, and click the Repair button.
  5. Once the repair is complete, try updating iTunes.

4. Uninstall and reinstall iTunes

If you’re seeing the ‘iTunes has invalid signature’ error when you try to update iTunes, uninstalling and reinstalling it can fix the problem. Uninstalling iTunes will not delete any backups of your iPhone nor will it delete your media library.

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Go to Programs>Uninstall a program.
  3. Select iTunes.
  4. Click the Uninstall button.
  5. Download iTunes and install it.

5. Change security settings

This option should be used as a last resort and you should reset the security settings back to their default state once you’ve installed or updated iTunes.

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. In the location bar, paste this: inetcpl.cpl and tap Enter.
  3. Go to the Advanced tab.
  4. Go through the list of settings. Under Security, enable ‘Allow software to run or install even if signature is invalid’.
  5. Click Apply.
  6. Update/install iTunes.
  7. Uncheck the ‘Allow software to run or install even if signature is invalid’.

Conclusion

The ‘iTunes has invalid signature’ error may occur if you’re installing a particularly old version of iTunes or if your Windows 10 is on a much older version than it should be.

Make sure you install the latest version of iTunes that is available, and that you keep your Windows 10 system up to date so that apps can install and update without any trouble.
