How to Remove Weather on Taskbar

If there’s anything that helps Windows users keep track of their immediate environment in real-time, it certainly is the weather widget, which Microsoft has moved to the bottom-right corner of the taskbar since the launch of Windows 10.

As handy as this insightful information widget can be, some Windows users find it distracting and complain about the amount of space it takes up on the taskbar. Whatever your reasons may be for wanting to disable Weather on your taskbar, you can do that easily and in seconds.

If you’re running the Windows 10 build that moved the Weather tile to the bottom-right corner, you’ll certainly find it on your taskbar. The Weather tile is also known as the News and Interest tab, so you can do a lot more on it than getting feeds on when it’s going to weather situation in your location.

Weather is enabled on the taskbar by default. Thus, you will also get updates on sports, world news, stocks, and a host of other vital information. If you find yourself not digging any of these, you can disable Weather with the following steps:

  • Right-click on the weather icon on the bottom-right corner of the taskbar
  • Navigate to and click News and Interests from the list of options
  • Select Turn Off from the options that pop up next

The Weather widget will immediately disappear from your taskbar, thereby reducing the cluster on your bottom screen.

However, if you ever need to turn back on the Weather widget on your taskbar, follow the steps mentioned above again, but this time, you’ll need to choose between the following options at the endpoint:

  • Show Icons Only
  • Show Icon and Text

By choosing Show Icons Only option, you’ll only see icons of the current weather on your taskbar, be it snowy, sunny, or rainy. Alternatively, the Show icon and text option will show you how many degrees there are as the day passes.

P.S: If you don’t want the “and Interests” panel to pop up whenever you hover your mouse cursor over it, you can dive into the widget settings again and disable the Open on Hover option.

To do this, follow the same steps as in the previous methods highlighted and uncheck the Open on Hover option at the endpoint.

How to Disable Weather for Multiple Users

If you have more than one user account logged onto your computer, you can harness the Registry Editor to disable the feature for all users. To do this,

  • Press Windows key + R to launch Run Command
  • In the run Window, type Regedit in the provided text box and press okay to launch Registry Editor.
  • In the empty top field, paste the following: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Feeds
  • Look out for the registry ShellFeedsTaskbarViewMode
  • Navigate to and right-click on Feeds on the left pane
  • Hover over New to expand the options and select Dword
  • In the mini window, enter ShellFeedsTaskbarViewMode as its value name
  • Enter 2 as value data
  • Finally, click OK to save all changes

With this done, no user logged onto your PC will see Weather on the taskbar.

Final Notes

Weather on the taskbar comes with many insightful icons, all of which can be removed with a few tweaks in the settings. However, unless you’re convinced that they’re a menace and redundant, it’s better to leave them and change how they appear on your taskbar instead.
