How to make a Discord server
Discord is a communication tool but unlike Slack and Microsoft Teams, Discord also centers around building communities. It allows users create servers, and invite other users to join them. These servers are basically a collection of various chat channels.
Make a Discord server
Anyone can make a Discord server. There are no rules as to what it should be for, and you can choose to make it as public or as private as you want it to be. You will start out as the admin and owner of the server but you can add more roles to it, and customize the permissions for different users in the server.
How to make a Discord server
To make a Discord sever, you must have a Discord account. You can create a server from the desktop app or from the web app.
- Open Discord and sign in with your account.
- In the column on the left, click the plus button.
- In the window that opens, click Create my own.
- You will be asked what type of server you want to create: for your friends or family, or for a community. You can skip this step if you like and the server that is created will be set up so that it’s essentially private an invite only.
- Give the server a name, and upload a picture for it if you want.
- Click Create.
- The server will be created.
You can start inviting users to the server once you create it however, it’s a good idea to first review the server’s settings.
- In the column on the left, right-click the server that you created.
- From the menu, select Server settings.
- Explore the settings and pay close attention to Roles, Moderation, and Community.
Invite to Discord server
If, after creating your Discord server, you’d like to invite other users to it, follow these steps.
- Right-click the server in the column on the right.
- Select Invite people.
- Copy the link and send it to whoever you want to invite
- Alternatively, you can enter a user’s Discord name in the search bar and send an invite to them via Discord.
Conclusion
It’s easy to create a Discord server however, to make it popular and grow the number of active users on it takes a great deal of work. Discord servers that are created for a specific purpose or community may be easier to grow than general topic servers. For example, you may be able to create a server for games but growing it will be an incredibly difficult task. If you, instead create a server for a specific game and for users in a specific region e.g. PUBG players on the North Pole, you may have better luck growing it.
