How to Install Windows 11 on VM: 7 Simple and Quick Steps
If you are a Windows 10 user but want to try out Windows 11 without replacing the existing stable OS, you can always go for the virtual machine. Using virtual machines or VM, you can use Windows 11 besides your actual OS.
This article will explain Windows 11 VM in detail, which means you can learn about the whole process of installing Windows 11 on a virtual machine step-by-step.
Method to Install Windows 11 on a VM
There are different ways to install Windows 11 VM, we will demonstrate the method with a free solution named Oracle VirtualBox.
Step 1: Download Windows 11 VM Oracle VirtualBox
Download Oracle VirtualBox from its official website.
Step 2: Download Windows 11 ISO
Visit the Windows download page and scroll to the section Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO.) Select Windows 11 from the drop-down menu and click on the Download button. Select English as the product language before clicking Confirm.
Step 3: Install Oracle VirtualBox
Navigate to the VM file location and launch it by double-clicking. Keep clicking Next to proceed. Click Yes when it’s time to install a network interface. It’ll interrupt network connectivity temporarily. Continue clicking Next and agreeing to any prompts you’ll get till the installation finishes.
Step 4: Set up Windows 11 VM
Now, launch Oracle VirtualBox and click on the New button. Add a name for VM before choosing Microsoft Windows as the Type and Windows 11 as the Version.
Step 5: Allocate Resources
VirtualBox will always suggest a space size for you when it’ll ask you to adjust memory size at the Create Virtual Machine step. Allocate according to your available RAM size, but make sure to keep it within the green mark.
Also, create a virtual HDD for storing files and apps on VM by clicking on Create button. Then, select the VDI option and click on Next. Then, adjust the size of VDI and click Create.
Step 6: Take Preparation
Now, select your VM name from the sidebar and choose Settings, and then Storage. Under the Controller: SATA option, select the blue CD icon. From the right panel, select the Live CD/DVD located under the Optical Drive option.
Click the blue CD icon beside the Optical Drive option and navigate to the location of the Windows 11 ISO file to select that, and click OK.
Step 7: Launch and Install Windows 11 VM
After clicking on the Start icon, you have to click inside the VM window quickly. Be prompt to press any key to boot the Windows 11.
Since Microsoft doesn’t support Windows 11 on VM, try this workaround:
Press Shift + F10 together while on the set up screen to open Command Prompt. Type “Regedit” and hit Enter. Select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > Setup and right-click on Setup to choose New > Key. Add “LabConfig” as its name before pressing Enter.
Now, right-click on LabConfig and choose New > Dword (32-bit.) A new value named BypassTPMCheck will get created. Right-click on it, and choose Modify to set its data to 1.
Also, create two more values named BypassTPMCheck and BypassSecureBootCheck and set their data to 1.
Now, close the window and exit the Command Prompt. Go ahead to install Windows 11. Make sure to choose the biggest partition for installation. Once finished, you can start using the new OS.
