How to fix Zoom echo issues during a call

Audio issues are extremely common with video calls. They appear in some of the best apps including FaceTime. Audio problems have nothing to do with the size of a call i.e., how many people are in a call. Instead, they are caused by connection problems, problems with the app itself, and problems with how the audio hardware is set up.

Zoom echo issues during a call

An echo during an audio or video call isn’t uncommon. Plenty of apps have this problem and Zoom is no different. If you’re consistently getting an echo during your Zoom calls, try the fixes below.

Check hardware set up

Check your audio device; the echo is often caused when an external mic or a headset with a mic is used. The audio in (mic) and audio out (speaker/headphones) are too close and cause the echo. Switch to the built-in audio devices and check if the echo goes away.

If you’ve been using the built-in mic and speakers, try to switch over to a pair of headphones that have a mic built in. They may resolve problems with the built-in hardware. 

There is no rule as to which is better; internal or external audio. The configurations differ on each system which is why it’s a bit of trial and error.

Check internet connection

Make sure your internet connection is stable. 

  1. Visit Speedtest.net.
  2. Click Go.
  3. Check the ping (it should be a low value).

If your connection is unstable, you may get an echo. Try to reduce bandwidth usage while you’re in a Zoom call.

Check audio settings

When you join a Zoom meeting, you have the option to select your audio device. All participants have the same options and the audio of a meeting can be routed to both the desktop and to a phone. 

  1. In a Zoom meeting, click the arrow button next to the mic.
  2. From the menu, make sure only one mic and speaker is selected.
  3. Ask all other participants to check this same setting.
  4. Ask participants to join the call from only one device instead of from multiple devices (one device per participant).

Conclusion

Audio echo can happen in any audio/video call. If you see it across multiple apps and services, especially in a desktop recording app like Audacity, your audio set up is likely to blame. If your mic is extra sensitive, the acoustics of the room may be working against you as well. Try taking meetings in a different room and double-check your audio settings. Reduce the volume of the mic and the speakers.
