How to fix Apex Legends 1.84 update crashing

Apex Legends receives regular updates. It’s the sort of game that will get stale and lose players if new challenges, events, skins, etc., aren’t added to it regularly. Apex Legends, while an online game, has massive updates when new items are added to the game and as such, a large update means there is always potential for something to go wrong.

Apex Legends 1.84 update crashing

The Apex Legends 1.84 update was a patch fix. This means that in addition to adding new items and making significant game changes or improvements, it also fixed a few things. The fixes range from character specific ones to general fixes that impacted the overall mechanics of the game. You can read the official release notes here.

The Apex Legends 1.84 update has been stable for the most part but some users have reported the game crashes either on start up or when they’re in the middle of a match. If the game is crashing constantly or intermittently while you play try these fixes.

Close other apps/programs

The game update may be a bit heavier or some of the apps that are running on your system may be hogging system resources to the point where the game cannot use them.

Before you begin playing, quit all apps that you aren’t using, especially RAM hungry apps like Chrome. Make sure no unnecessary apps are using the GPU or CPU while you play. The crash may simply be caused by the game not being able to draw the power it needs from the CPU.

Check server status

Apex Legends is an online game and that means you connect to an online server to play it. Servers, no matter how well managed, can fail or go offline. If the game is suddenly crashing, check the server status. There is no official server status page for the game but there are plenty of third-party ones that you can try. Apex Legends Status is a good place to go.

You can see the server status on a per-platform basis and see which areas of the game are impacted by a server outage, as well as the regions where the problem is present.

With server problems, there isn’t much you can do other than to wait for the game devs to sort it out.

Repair game files

It’s possible that some game files were corrupted during the update. This can happen if the update was interrupted or you quit Steam unexpectedly. The good news is, you can perform an in-place fix and you do not have to install the game again.

  1. Open Steam.
  2. Go to Library.
  3. Right-click Apex Legends in the column on the left and select Properties from the context menu.
  4. Go to the Local Files tab.
  5. Click Verify integrity of games files.
  6. Allow Steam to check and repair files.

Update graphics drivers

A game update may require newer drivers on your system. It’s rare but it does happen. Apex Legends is generally resource heavy so you may need to update your GPU drivers before you can play the updated game.

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Display Adapters.
  3. Right-click the GPU and select Update driver from the context menu.
  4. Search online for driver updates and install the ones that are available.

Note: Driver updates may be late to arrive via Windows Update. Use the Nvidia GeForce Experience app or the AMD Radeon Graphics driver installer app to download updates directly from your GPU manufacturer.

Reinstall the game

If all else fails, you can install the game fresh. It’s not the quickest solution given the game size is big but it works when nothing else does.

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Go to Programs>Uninstall a program.
  3. Select Apex Legends and click the Uninstall button.
  4. Once the game has been uninstalled, download it again on Steam.

Conclusion

Updates can be tricky; the larger the update and bigger the change it makes, the higher there is a chance that something might go wrong. Apex Legends updates are normally stable but there will always be exceptions. The good news is, no update is suddenly going to render your system obsolete or unable to run the game i.e., the baseline hardware requirements do not change. It’s only a matter of fixing a few things and whatever problems you’re having in the game will go away.
