How do I update my AMD graphics card?

Graphics cards require drivers to work properly. If you have a GPU, it’s a good idea to always keep its drivers up to date. GPU manufacturers will release updates regularly, and will almost always release an update when there is a major OS update that’s been released.

Update AMD graphics card

AMD is one two major GPU manufacturers. You will find AMD chips on both desktop and mobile systems. Like Intel and Nvidia chips, AMD chips get regular driver updates. Here’s how you can update them.

1. Device Manager

It’s best if driver updates come via the Device Manager.

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Display Adapters.
  3. Right-click the AMD chip and select Update drivers.
  4. Select Search automatically for drivers.
  5. Install the available drivers.

2. Combined Chipset and Radeon Graphics driver installer

AMD has an official app that checks for driver updates and installs them when they are available.

  1. Download the Combined Chipset and Radeon Graphics driver installer from AMD.
  2. Run the EXE.
  3. It will check for and download available drivers.
  4. Install the drivers through the app once they have been downloaded.

3. Manually download drivers

You can manually download drivers for an AMD chip if you know which chip you have.

  1. Open Task Manager.
  2. Go to the Performance tab.
  3. Select your AMD GPU from the column on the left.
  4. Once selected, look at the top right corner of the right pane and note down the name of the chip.
  5. Visit the official AMD support website.
  6. Select your chip from the list.
  7. Click Submit.
  8. Select the OS version you want to download drivers for and click the Download button.
  9. Run the EXE file to install the drivers.

Blocked driver updates

Windows 10 sometimes blocks GPU updates. This normally happens if there are other hardware components that it thinks will not work with the new driver updates. It may also happen if Windows Updates thinks you’re on an older version of Windows 10 and the driver update is for newer versions. Windows 10 may be right or it may be wrong in blocking the update. Make sure your system is ready for the update. Check online forums to see if anyone is having trouble after installing the update.

Conclusion

Drivers should always be kept up to date but Windows Update is often late to receive updates. If you know a driver update is available for a critical hardware component like the GPU, it’s a good idea to be proactive about installing it. Short of hardware problems or conflicts, you should always try to run the latest version of any and all drivers for your hardware components.
