How To Fix Resume Playback In VLC Player After The Creators Update

VLC player has a neat little resume playback feature. It detects when you play a media file that has recently been played in VLC. It knows where you left off when you closed a file. When you open it again, VLC player offers to let you resume where you left off. There is nothing similar in the Videos & TV app that comes with Windows 10. Speaking of Windows 10, the Creators Update has broken the resume playback feature in VLC player. Of all the problems a Windows update could have had, this is the most unpredictable. It’s possible, though not much, that VLC will roll out a fix for it. If you don’t want to wait, there is a much simpler way to fix resume playback in VLC player.

The fix is simple but you’ll hate it. Uninstall and reinstall VLC player. For whatever reason, the Creators Update broke this feature. Like with most other bugs, this only happens if you upgraded from the Anniversary Update. If you’re on a clean install, you won’t get this bug.

To uninstall VLC player, open Control Panel and go to Program. Select VLC player from the list of installed programs, and click ‘Uninstall’. You will need administrative rights to do this.

Once the app has been uninstalled, download and install it again. The feature will work this time around.

The Windows 10 Update Assistant resets app defaults when it upgrades Windows to a newer version. This in itself is annoying because you have to set your preferences again. It also creates additional problems. Another problem that Windows 10 users are seeing is white photo thumbnails in File Explorer. The fix for this lies in resetting app defaults and rebuilding the icon cache.

It isn’t definitive but it’s possible that the update broke VLC’s own caching feature that allows to remember your position in a media file. If you aren’t too keen on uninstalling VLC, and installing it again, try resetting app defaults for videos. There is a small chance that it might fix resume playback in VLC. During our test, the problem didn’t go away until the app was reinstalled.

The Creators Update has broken quite a few things but they’re mostly small. The update added PowerShell to the Win X menu but in doing so, it broke rasterized fonts. Again, this is a small and easily fixable problem. It just shouldn’t be happening. The Upgrade Assistant, while a great way to upgrade the OS needs to stop breaking stuff with every major update.

  1. I upgraded from 2.2.0 to 3.0.2 (64 bit) on Win 10 and it broke ‘Continue playback’ function.

In Preferences>Interfaces> “Main interfaces” the interface module was set to “default”. I changed this to “Qt” and it fixed the Resume Play.

“Continue playback?” was also set to “Always”.
