How to change your Steam profile picture

Your Steam profile can either be public or private. It’s entirely up to you what type of information you display publicly. Like most online IDs and profiles, your Steam account also lets you set a profile picture. You can always skip this step if you want. If you need to change your Steam profile picture, it’s pretty easy. You can change it from the Steam web portal, and also from the Steam client.

Steam profile picture

Visit Steam in your browser and login with your Steam ID. At the top right, click your username and from the dropdown, select View Profile. On your Profile page, click the Edit Profile button.

Scroll down to the Avatar section, and select the image you want to use or you can select one of the game avatars that are available. Upload the image and it will be synced to your desktop client in a few seconds. Pay close attention to the size requirements for the picture because there are no crop or positioning tools available to center an image.

To change your Steam profile picture from the Steam client, open it. At the top right, select your display name and from the dropdown select View my profile. On your profile screen, click the Edit Profile button.

This will take you to the same profile editing screen as the one on the Steam web portal. Scroll down to the Avatar section and upload the image you want to use. The Steam client doesn’t have any image cropping or positioning tools for the picture either. This section of the Steam client is basically a web wrapper of the web portal. Make sure the image is the right size and then click Upload.

You can only upload one image and it will be scaled down to two smaller sizes for display in the friends’ list, among other places. Since the same image that you upload will be scaled down, it’s a good idea to find one that looks reasonably good even when it’s small.

If you have an image that isn’t the right size, you can always crop and resize it. Crop the image to a square and then resize it for best results. The game avatars aren’t a bad choice either though obviously they won’t be unique because a lot of people use them.

You can change your Steam profile picture any time you want and from either the web portal or the desktop client.
