How to download videos posted to Reddit

Reddit posts can be text-based, links, photos, and of course videos. Most videos that are shared on Reddit are shared from a different service e.g. YouTube, Streamable, LiveLeak, or something similar. In some cases though, videos are uploaded to Reddit directly. It makes it a little harder to share them without the link to the original post which is easily available but may not be everyone’s favorite way to share it. In that case, you can download videos posted to Reddit, and share them so long as you’re not plagiarizing anything and giving due credit. Here’s how.

Download videos from Reddit

Much like there are web apps that let you download videos from Twitter, there are also apps that do the same for Reddit. You can take your pick but we recommend Reddit video downloader. The web app is free but if you want desktop apps, you will have to donate something. You can get both Windows and Mac apps for $10.

Visit Reddit Video Downloader and paste the link to the Reddit post you want to download a video from. Click the orange arrow button and the video will load in the web app.

You can play the video if you want, or click the Download button. This will open the video in a new tab. Right-click it and select the save as option in the context menu. The video saves in the MP4 format.

This is a web app and technically, it should work on a mobile device as well but on iOS, there doesn’t seem to be any way to get a save as option in Safari or in Chrome. If you’d like to download a video posted to Reddit on your mobile phone, use this app but when you get to the Download button, you will see a ‘Copy video URL’ button there as well. Click that to copy the video’s URL and then open VLC player on your phone.

Go to the Network tab and tap the ‘Downloads’ option. Paste the URL and tap on Download. The file will download and you can use a file manager on your phone to access it. On Android, you can go to the Storage option in the Settings app to explore files on your device. On iOS, open the Files app and go to the VLC folder.

The video will be there and you can open/play it in any app you want. It will still be in MP4 format which media players generally support. You can also play it in VLC player if you want.
