How to send a Microsoft Teams invite
Microsoft Teams has multiple ways to add users to a team. Most team owners or admins will add them via an Office 365 group or through the ActiveDirectory. These two methods allow users to be added more easily because an admin does not need to enter their emails manually.
Microsoft Teams invite
Microsoft Teams has lots of quick ways to add users but you can still manually invite a new user. This is useful if you need to add a guest user or if you’ve added a new user to the Active Directory or Office 365 group, and you’d like to add them to a team(s).
There are two ways you can invite users to a Microsoft Teams team; with a link or via email. You must have admin rights (or similar) to add/invite users to a team.
Microsoft Teams invite users – link
To send an invite link to a user, follow these steps.
- Open Microsoft Teams.
- Go to the Teams tab.
- Select the team you want to invite a user to.
- Click the more options button next to the team’s name.
- Click Get link to team.
- Send the link to the user you want to invite
Microsoft Teams invite users – email
To invite a user to join a Microsoft Teams team via email, follow these steps.
- Open Microsoft Teams.
- Select Teams from the column on the left.
- Select the team you want to invite a user to.
- Click the more options button next to the team name.
- Select Add member.
- In the window that opens, enter the email for the user(s) you want to invite.
- Click Add and close the window.
- The user must accept the invitation to join the team.
Microsoft Teams invite restrictions
A Microsoft Teams invite is easy to send, especially if you use a link to send the invite however, having the link doesn’t guarantee that a user will be able to join the meeting.
The team must be configured to allow the user to join if the user is on a different domain. If, for example, you’re adding a guest user, you must already have Guess Access enabled.
If the team’s settings aren’t configured to allow the type of user you want to invite, the link will not be of any user. The user will be prevented from joining the team when they click on it.
Conclusion
Microsoft Teams appears to be restrictive in how it allows users to be added but it is in fact quite flexible. The only thing you have to do is make sure your team’s settings are correct. If you’re inviting Active Directory users, you are highly unlikely to run into problems.
