Microsoft Teams We’re Having Trouble Finding Your Notebook Error (FIXED)

Microsoft Teams can open Microsoft 365 apps right inside it. Among these apps is OneNote; Microsoft’s note-taking app. It’s installed by default on Windows 10 and you don’t need a paid Microsoft 365 subscription to use it. In Microsoft Teams, you can add OneNote as an app or you can add a particular notebook to a team or chat.

Sorry, we’re having trouble finding your notebook

OneNote can be added (enabled) as an app in Microsoft Teams. You can also create a Notebook within a chat thread, or a Team. Additionally, if you’ve created a Notebook in the OneNote desktop app, or the online OneNote app, you can add it to Microsoft Teams via a share link.

In all of these cases, i.e., when a user tries to access a shared notebook, or when a user tries to paste the link to one, the ‘Sorry, we’re having trouble getting your notebook’ error may appear.

1. Check link

Check if you’re able to access the Notebook online.

  1. Open Microsoft Teams.
  2. Go to the channel with the notebook you cannot access.
  3. Open the Notebook.
  4. Click the more options button at the top right.
  5. Select ‘Copy link to tab’.
  6. Open your web browser.
  7. Paste the link, and tap Enter.
  8. Check if you’re able to access the link. If you cannot access the link, the notebook has likely been deleted.

2. Open in Microsoft Teams online

Microsoft Teams is also a web app much like other Microsoft 365 apps and you can open Notebooks from Microsoft Teams in it.

  1. Visit Microsoft Teams online.
  2. Go to the Notebook tab.

3. Check Notebook on Sharepoint

Only Notebooks that are uploaded to Sharepoint and/or OneDrive can be shared to Microsoft Teams and added as a tab. The notebook may have limited access though, if it has been shared to the Teams General channel, everyone should be able to view it.

  1. Open Microsoft Teams.
  2. Go to Files tab from the navigation column on the left.
  3. Under ‘Views’ select ‘Microsoft Teams’.
  4. In the pane on the right, select the notebook you want to access.
  5. Click the more options button at the very end.
  6. Select ‘Copy link’.
  7. Go to the Sharepoint tab.
  8. Copy the link.

  1. Paste it in your browser.
  2. At the very top, click ‘Home’.

  1. In the column on the left, select Documents.
  2. You will see folders for different channels created for the Team. Make sure the notebook is listed under the correct channel i.e., the one you’re trying to access it from.
  3. If it isn’t, click the more options button and select Move To from the menu. Move the notebook to the correct channel.

4. Remove notebook

If a notebook has been deleted, something the previous two solutions will make obvious, then you can only remove it from Microsoft Teams to keep users from trying to access it.

  1. Open Microsoft Teams.
  2. Go to the notebook tab.
  3. Click the tab’s dropdown.
  4. Select Remove.

If the notebook has not been added as a tab, only an admin will be able to delete it.

  1. Open your Sharepoint website.
  2. Go to the Documents tab.
  3. Go to the folder named after the channel the notebook was shared to.
  4. Look for the notebook and click the more options button.
  5. Select Delete from the context menu to remove it from Microsoft Teams.

Conclusion

Generally speaking, there are only two reasons a user will see the Sorry, we’re having trouble getting your notebook error message; if the notebook has moved/been deleted, or Microsoft Teams or OneNote have a service outage. Outside these two scenarios, a Notebook may not open if it’s being shared from a different organization or team. The Notebook will have to be copied or moved to a Team’s folder in Sharepoint in that case.
