How to play Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine on Linux

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine is a third-person hack and slash video game developed by Relic Entertainment and published by THQ. It was released in September 2011 and re-released as “Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine Anniversary Edition.” Here’s how to get the game working on your Linux computer.

Getting Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine working on Linux

Space Marine works on Linux and has a gold rating on ProtonDB. So, you shouldn’t have too much difficulty getting the game working on your Linux system. To start the setup process, Steam must be installed.

Install Steam

Installing Steam on Linux is an easy process, and thankfully, the app is supported by all Linux operating systems. To get it working on your computer, you must launch a terminal. You can launch a terminal window by pressing Ctrl + Alt + T on the keyboard or by launching “Terminal” from the app menu.

With the terminal window open and ready to use, the installation of Steam can begin. Follow the installation instructions below that match the Linux operating system you currently use.

Ubuntu

On Ubuntu, you can get the latest Steam version working on your computer with the apt install command.

sudo apt install steam

Debian

On Debian, the Steam app can be installed. However, the user must download the latest DEB installation package from the Steam website beforehand. To get your hands on the newest Steam DEB package, make use of the wget download command below.

wget https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/client/installer/steam.deb

After downloading the Steam DEB package to your Debian system, you’ll be able to install the Steam app on your computer using the dpkg command below.

sudo dpkg -i steam.deb

Once the Steam DEB package is set up on your Debian system, you’ll have to correct any dependency issues that may have occurred during the installation process.

sudo apt-get install -f

Arch Linux

On Arch Linux, the Steam app is available, but only to those who have the “multilib” software repository enabled. To enable this software repository on your computer, open up the /etc/pacman.conf file in a text editor (as root). Then, find the “multilib” section, remove the # symbol, and remove the # symbol from the lines directly below the “multilib” line as well.

After editing, save the text file. Then, use the pacman -Syy command to re-sync Arch Linux with the official servers.

sudo pacman -S steam

Fedora/OpenSUSE

If you use Fedora or OpenSUSE Linux, you will be able to install the Steam application on your computer using software repositories included out of the box. That being said, the Flatpak release of Steam works much better, and we suggest using that version instead.

Flatpak

To get Steam working as a Flatpak, you’ll have to set up the Flatpak runtime on your computer. Setting up the runtime is easy. To do it, follow our guide on configuring Flatpak on Linux.

With the Flatpak runtime set up on your Linux system, you’ll be able to install Steam using the two commands below.

flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo
flatpak install flathub com.valvesoftware.Steam
