How to play Sea of Thieves on Linux
Sea of Thieves is an open-world multiplayer pirate game. The player can team up with friends and ride around on a pirate ship across the high seas. Here’s how to get it working on Linux.
Sea of Thieves on Linux
Sea of Thieves is an Xbox Studios video game. As a result, Microsoft has no interest in porting it to Linux. That said, it works just fine on Linux by using Steam’s “Steam Play” feature.
Install Steam
To gain access to Steam Play, you need to install the Linux version of Steam. To start the installation of Steam on your Linux PC, launch a terminal window. After that, follow the command-line installation instructions outlined below that correspond with the OS you use.
Ubuntu
The Steam app can be set up quite easily using the following Apt command in a Ubuntu terminal.
sudo apt install steam
Debian
Debian Linux provides its users access to Steam in the “non-free” software repository. However, the “non-free” repo must be manually enabled. Instead, it is better to install Steam by downloading it directly from Valve.
Using the wget command below, download Steam to Debian. Then, make use of the dpkg command to install Steam on your Linux PC.
Note: During the installation, you may see errors appear on the screen. These errors are dependency problems. To solve these problems, follow this guide.
wget https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/client/installer/steam.deb sudo dpkg -i steam.deb
Arch Linux
Arch Linux supports the Linux Steam client, and users can install it through the “multilib” software repository. To start the installation on your Arch system, open up the /etc/pacman.conf
file and manually enable the “multilib” software repository.
After enabling the multilib software repository, re-sync pacman using the commands you usually use to update. Then, install Steam using the command below.
sudo pacman -S steam
Fedora/OpenSUSE
If you’re using Fedora or OpenSUSE, the best way to get Steam working is through the Flatpak instructions. Flatpak should work out of the box on both distributions.
Flatpak
If you plan on playing Sea of Thieves on Steam via Flatpak, you’ll first need to enable the Flatpak runtime on your computer. To do that, install the “flatpak” package on your system. Or, follow this guide,
After setting up the Flatpak runtime, use the flatpak remote-add command to add the Flathub app store to your system. Flathub has the Steam Flatpak package.
flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo
Once you’ve added the Flathub app store to your system, you will be able to install the Steam Linux app with the flatpak install command below.
flatpak install flathub com.valvesoftware.Steam
