How to play Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne on Linux

Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne is the sequel to the original Max Payne game developed by Remedy and published by Rockstar. It follows detective Max Payne and continues his story. Here’s how to play it on Linux.

Getting Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne working on Linux

Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne is a Microsoft Windows game, however, because it was released on Steam it works on Linux quite well. To get started setting up this game, you’ll need to install Steam on your Linux PC.

Install Steam

To install Steam on Linux, open up a terminal window. You can open up a terminal window on the Linux desktop by pressing Ctrl + Alt + T on the keyboard. Or, search for “Terminal” in the app menu and launch it that way.

Once the terminal window is open, follow along with the installation instructions down below that correspond with the Linux OS you currently use.

Ubuntu

To get Steam working on Ubuntu, install it using the Apt command below.

sudo apt install steam

Debian

Steam works on Debian, and the best way to install it is to download the Steam DEB package directly to your computer from Valve’s website. To do that, use the following wget command down below.

wget https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/client/installer/steam.deb

After downloading the Steam DEB package to your computer, you’ll be able to install it. To install the software, use the following dpkg command down below.

sudo dpkg -i steam.deb

Now that Steam is installed on your Linux PC, use the following apt-get install -f command down below to correct any dependency issues that may have arisen during the installation.

Arch Linux

Steam is available for Arch Linux users, however, the “multilib” software repository needs to be enabled. To enable it, open up the /etc/pacman.conf file in your favorite text editor.

Inside of the configuration file, locate the “multilib” section and remove the # symbol. Also, remove that symbol from the lines directly below it. Then, save and re-sync Arch with the official servers.

sudo pacman -Syy

Finally, you can install the Steam app on Arch with the command below.

sudo pacman -S steam

Fedora/OpenSUSE

If you’re on either Fedora or OpenSUSE, Steam is installable via the software repositories included with the system. That being said, the Steam app is much more reliable on these operating systems if you install it via Flatpak, and we suggest those instructions instead.

Flatpak

To get Steam working via Flatpak, you’ll have to first set up the Flatpak runtime on your computer. To do that, please follow our in-depth guide on how to set up Flatpak on Linux.

Once the runtime is set up and ready to use, you’ll be able to install Steam via the Flathub app store using the commands below.

flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo
flatpak install flathub com.valvesoftware.Steam
