It is a command line tool which determines the software applications that makes your laptop use more power than necessary. It has gained much popularity recently. Many free applications including Firefox have been patched to reduce their power consumption since its release. Lets see how we can install and use it in Ubuntu.
Open the terminal and run the following command to install it.
sudo apt-get install powertop
Once the installation is complete, run the following command in the terminal to launch it.
sudo powertop

From here you will get an idea of the applications consuming more power and hence you will be able to identify the culprits :).
