How to upgrade to Fedora 38

How to upgrade to Fedora 38 with Gnome Software

If you use Fedora Linux, upgrading is essential to ensure that your installation is using the latest security patches and bug fixes. Furthermore, each update brings new features, so it’s worth upgrading.

To upgrade your Fedora system to the new Fedora 38 release, follow these steps. Begin by opening up the Gnome Software application. You can find Gnome Software in the Gnome app menu by searching for the “Software” app. Once you are inside the Gnome Software app, navigate to the “Updates” section to check if Fedora 38 is available. How to upgrade to Fedora 38 with the terminal

If you do not use the Gnome version of Fedora, you will need to upgrade from version 37 to version 38 using the terminal. To start the upgrade, open a terminal window on the Fedora desktop. You can open a terminal by pressing Ctrl + Alt + T on the keyboard, or by searching for “Terminal” in the app menu.

Once the terminal window is open, use the dnf update command to upgrade the current packages on your Fedora system. It is critical that you install pending software updates before attempting to upgrade to Fedora 38.

sudo dnf update

After installing software updates, use the dnf install command to install the “dnf-plugin-system-upgrade” package. This package is used to upgrade between Fedora releases.

sudo dnf install dnf-plugin-system-upgrade

After installing the package above, the upgrade process can begin. Using the system-upgrade command, download the Fedora 38 packages to your computer. This process may take some time to complete, as the command will download every package that needs to be upgraded.

sudo dnf system-upgrade download --releasever=38

When the download process is complete, you must reboot your Fedora Linux system to install the upgrade packages. To reboot, simply use the desktop restart button, or enter the command below.

sudo dnf system-upgrade reboot

Once you have the Fedora 38 ISO file downloaded, the next step is to create a bootable USB installer. To do this, you will need to use a USB creation tool, and we recommend using Etcher, a free and open-source tool that works on Mac, Windows, and Linux OSes.

After downloading and installing Etcher on your computer, insert a USB flash drive with a capacity of at least 4 GB. Then, click on the “Flash!” button to start the USB creation process. Once the process is complete, you will be ready to install Fedora 38 on your PC.

Now that you have created the Fedora 38 USB installer, the next step is to reboot your computer into the BIOS. Once in the BIOS, configure it to boot from the USB. Once the computer boots from USB, you can install Fedora 38 on your computer.
