How To Upgrade From Ubuntu 11.04 To Ubuntu 11.10

Earlier, we reviewed the new features of Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot. Today the Ubuntu 11.10 Beta 2 was launched and now you can update your existing Ubuntu 11.04 operating system to the new and improved Ubuntu 11.10. In this post we will provide you with a complete walkthrough of the upgrade process to update Ubuntu Natty Narwhal to Oneiric Ocelot.

Note: It is advised to backup your system before performing the upgrade, since this is a Beta version and may have some functionality issues. Moreover, some new packages will be installed, existing packages will be upgraded and obsolete packages will be removed. This may result in the removal of some of your favorite applications.

To start the upgrading process, Press ALT+F2, type update-manager –d and click Run.

Update manager

This will open the Update Manager where an upgrade button will be visible with a message that the new Ubuntu release is available for upgrade. Click Upgrade to continue

Shortly after continuing, you will be asked to enter your password, after which the upgrade process will initiate. During the process, the unsupported packages will have to be removed. For that, a prompt will appear with a list of the packages that will be removed, installed and upgraded. Click Start Upgrade to continue.

Remove Packages

The update can take a long period of time and the new packages may require a few hours to download (depending upon your internet connection speed).

After the upgrade is complete, you will be prompted to restart your computer for the changes to take effect. Once you log back in again the GUI changes should be enough to inform you that the upgrade was successful, however, if you would like to confirm your existing Ubuntu version, type the following in the Terminal:

lsb_release -a

Terminal

Enjoy the new Ubuntu 11.10 experience.

  1. i had to cancel my upgrade halfway through… now I don’t have the option to upgrade in Update Manager.  What can I do?

    • I’m sure you’ve resolved by now but just in case; if you check your software sources and set your updates to notify of ANY new version and reload the app, it should give you the option. Aside from that, I would say reboot and check for new software. That exact thing happened to me some time back.

  2. This solved my problem (same as yours):

  3. Same comment – unable to login with my default user account. After entering the password, system screen goes blank for a few seconds, and then returns me to the login screen. Endlessly. Great.

  4. After upgrading I, too, am unable to use my admin account due to something which looks like it is not accepting password. The symptoms are enter password, depress enter. The system goes from UI to log screen (white characters on black background full screen) a few lines are typed then it switches back to GUI background, with login dialog box still active. After several attempts to freeze log messages I don’t know what is being printed exactly but it doesn’t look like an error. The net result is same as Ahmad’s comment. The appearance is as if the password isn’t accepted. I say that because if an incorrect password is entered the red “Invalid password” message is displayed in the dialog box. I can log in as guest but no firefox/thunderbird is available. Also wireless connection from 11.04 is gone and I have no way to re-establish it.
From my perspective upgrade in place from 11.04 is broken.

  5. After my upgrade unable to use my admin account because it is not taking my password any more.
