How to play Wasteland 2: Director’s Cut on Linux

Wasteland 2: Director’s Cut is a post-apocalyptic RPG for PC. It was released on Windows, Mac, OS, Linux, and consoles in 2015. Here’s how to play it on your Linux PC.

Getting Wasteland 2: Director’s Cut working on Linux

Wasteland 2 is a native Linux video game, so you won’t need to use Proton or Steam Play to enjoy the game. That being said, you will need the official Steam app to install the game on your computer.

To get Steam working on your Linux computer, start by launching a terminal window. You can open up a terminal window by pressing Ctrl + Alt + T on the keyboard. Alternatively, you can open up a terminal by searching for “Terminal” in the app menu.

With the terminal window open and ready to use, the installation of Steam can begin. Using the installation instructions below that match your Linux OS, get the Steam app working on your computer.

Ubuntu

Use the following apt install command to install the Steam app on Ubuntu.

sudo apt install steam

Debian

On Debian, you will need to download the official Steam DEB package to your computer via the Steam website. To download the latest Steam DEB package to your computer, run the following wget download command.

wget https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/client/installer/steam.deb

After downloading the latest Steam version to your computer, use the dpkg command to install the software to Debian.

sudo dpkg -i steam.deb

With the Steam DEB package installed on your system, use the apt-get install -f command to correct any dependency issues that may have occurred during the installation process.

Arch Linux

The “multilib” software repository must be enabled to install Steam on Arch Linux. Open up the /etc/pacman.conf file in a text editor (as root). Once it is open, locate the “multilib” line and remove the # symbol from in front. Then, remove the # symbol from the lines directly below. Finally, save your edits and run the pacman -Syy command.

sudo pacman -Syy

Now that the “multilib” software repository is enabled on your computer install the Steam app’s latest version on Arch Linux using the pacman -S command.

sudo pacman -S steam

Fedora/OpenSUSE

On Fedora and OpenSUSE Linux, you’ll be able to install the Steam application using software repositories included within the operating system out of the box. However, the Flatpak release of Steam works much better on these operating systems, so we suggest following those instructions.

Flatpak

To get the Steam flatpak app working, install the Flatpak runtime on your system. You can get the runtime working by following our guide on the subject. Once the runtime is configured, install Steam using the two commands below.

flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo
flatpak install flathub com.valvesoftware.Steam

Now that the Steam app is running open it up on the desktop and log into your account. Once logged in, follow the step-by-step instructions below to get Wasteland 2 working.

Step 1: Find the “Store” button inside of the Steam app and click on it to load up the Steam store. Once you’ve loaded up the Steam store, find the search box, and click on it with the mouse.
