How to play Slay the Spire on Linux
Slay The Spire is a roguelike deck-building video game developed by MegaCrit and published by Humble Bundle. The game was released in 2017 for Microsoft Windows, MacOS, and Linux, with other platforms following in 2019. Here’s how to play Slay The Spire on your Linux system.
Getting Slay the Spire working on Linux
Slay the Spire is a native Linux video game; however, you will need to get the latest version of Steam set up to play it on your computer. Thankfully, almost every mainstream Linux operating system supports Steam in one way or another.
To get the Steam app working on Linux, you need a terminal window. To open up a terminal window on the Linux desktop, press Ctrl + Alt + T on the keyboard. Or search for “terminal” in the app menu to launch it.
With the terminal window open and ready to use, Steam can be installed. Follow the installation instructions below that correspond with the Linux OS you use.
Ubuntu
On Ubuntu, the Steam app is installable via the following apt install command.
sudo apt install steam
Debian
If you are on Debian Linux, the easiest way to get the Steam app working is by downloading it from the Valve website. It is also possible to install the app from the repos, but we will not cover those instructions in this guide.
To get your hands on the latest release of Steam for Debian,
wget https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/client/installer/steam.deb
After downloading the newest release of Steam to your Debian Linux system, it is time to install the software. Using the dpkg command, install the latest release of Steam onto your computer.
sudo dpkg -i steam.deb
With the Steam DEB package installed, use the apt-get install -f command to correct any dependency issues that may have occurred during the installation process.
Arch Linux
To use Steam on Arch Linux, you’ll need first to enable the “multilib” software repository. Open up the /etc/pacman.conf file as root in a text editor. Then, find the “multilib” line and remove the # symbol. Also, remove the # symbol from the line directly below it.
After editing the two lines, save the text file and close it. Then, run the pacman -Syy command.
sudo pacman -Syy
Finally, with the “multilib” software repository set up, install the latest release of Steam on your Arch system using the pacman -S command.
sudo pacman -S steam
Fedora/OpenSUSE
If you use Fedora or OpenSUSE Linux, you’ll be able to install the Steam app through software repositories included out of the box. However, the Steam app runs much better via Flatpak, so we suggest installing that version instead.
Flatpak
flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo
flatpak install flathub com.valvesoftware.Steam
With the Steam app installed, launch it via the app menu and log into your account. Then, follow the step-by-step instructions below to get Slay the Spire working on Linux.
Step 1: Find the “Store” button inside the Steam app and click on it with the mouse. After selecting the “Store” button, locate the search box and click on it with the mouse. Type in “Slay the Spire” and press Enter.
Step 2: After pressing the Enter key on the keyboard, you will see the Steam Store search results. Look through the results for “Slay the Spire” and click on it to access Slay the Spire’s Steam Store page.
Step 3: On the Slay the Spire Steam Store page, locate the green “Add to cart” button and click on it with the mouse to add the game to your cart. Then, select the cart icon to access your Steam cart.
Once inside the Steam cart, use the cart UI to purchase your game.
Step 4: Find the “Library” button and select it with the mouse. Upon selecting the “Library”
button, you will have access to your Steam games library. Search through for “Slay the Spire” and click on it to access the game’s Steam library page.
On the Slay the Spire Steam library page, find the blue “INSTALL” button and click on it with the mouse to download and install the game to your computer.
Step 5: After the Steam app completes downloading Slay the Spire, the blue “INSTALL” button will become a green “PLAY” button. Select this button to start up Slay the Spire on your Linux PC.
