How to play Shadow of the Tomb Raider on Linux

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is a 2018 action-adventure game developed by Eidos Montreal and published by Square Enix. In the game, players control Lara Croft in yet another adventure. Here’s how to run the game on Linux.

Getting Shadow of the Tomb Raider working on Linux

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is a native Linux video game. However, you won’t be able to get the game working on Linux without using the Linux Steam app.

To get the Steam app working on Linux, you’ll need to open up a terminal window on the desktop. You can launch a terminal window on Linux by pressing Ctrl + Alt + T on the keyboard. Alternatively, you can launch a terminal window by searching for “Terminal” in the app menu.

With the terminal window open and ready to use, the installation is ready to begin. Using the installation instructions below, get the latest version of Steam working on your Linux computer.

Ubuntu

To get Steam working on Ubuntu use the apt install command below.

sudo apt install steam

Debian

On Debian, you must install the Steam application using the downloadable DEB package from Valve’s website. To get your hands on the latest release of Steam, use the wget download command down below.

wget https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/client/installer/steam.deb

After downloading the Steam DEB package to your computer, use the dpkg command down below to install the Steam app on your computer.

sudo dpkg -i steam.deb

Once the Steam application is set up on your computer, you will need to correct any dependency issues that occurred during the installation process.

sudo apt-get install -f

Arch Linux

Those that want to use Steam on Arch Linux will first need to enable the “multilib” software repository. To enable this repository, open up the /etc/pacman.conf in a text editor (as root).

Once the file is open for editing, locate the “multilib” line and remove the # symbol from in front. Also, remove the # symbol from the lines directly below. When done save the edits and run the pacman -Syy command.

sudo pacman -Syy

Finally, install Steam on your Arch Linux system using the pacman -S command down below.

sudo pacman -S steam

Fedora/OpenSUSE

On Fedora Linux and OpenSUSE Linux, Steam can be installed through software repositories included out of the box. That said, the Flatpak release of Steam tends to work better on these OSes so we suggest following those instructions instead.

Flatpak

To set up Steam via Flatpak, start by following our guide on how to configure the Flatpak runtime. Once the runtime is configured, install the Steam app using the commands below.

flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo
flatpak install flathub com.valvesoftware.Steam
