How to play Dying Light on Linux

Dying Light is a 2015 survival horror video game developed by Techland and published by Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment. The game centers on surviving a zombie apocalypse, with a heavy focus on parkour and crafting. Here’s how you can play the game on Linux.

Getting Dying Light working on Linux

Dying Light is a native Linux game. However, according to users on ProtonDB, the native version isn’t great. Thankfully, it can be tuned to run on Linux with Proton. To set this up, you’ll need to install Steam.

To get Steam going on Linux, start opening up a terminal window. By pressing Ctrl + Alt + T on the keyboard, you can do this. Or, search for “Terminal” in the app menu and launch it that way.

With the terminal window open, the installation can begin. Using the instructions below that match your distribution, set up the latest Steam version on Linux.

Ubuntu

On Ubuntu, the Steam app is pretty easy to set up. Run the following apt install command in a terminal window to get the Steam app on your Ubuntu system.

sudo apt install steam

Debian

To use Steam on Debian, you must download the DEB package to your computer. Using the wget command, download the latest release of Steam from the Steam website.

wget https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/client/installer/steam.deb

After downloading the DEB package to your computer, you can install Steam on Debian using the dpkg command below.

sudo dpkg -i steam.deb

With the Steam app set up, run the apt-get install -f command to correct any dependency errors that may have occurred during the package installation.

sudo apt-get install -f

Arch Linux

Steam works on Arch Linux, but you must have the “multilib” software repository enabled first. To enable this software repository, open up the /etc/pacman.conf file in a text editor (as root).

Once the text file is open, find the “multilib” line and remove the # symbol. Be sure also to remove the # symbol from the lines directly below. Save when done, and run the pacman -Syy command.

sudo pacman -Syy

With the “multilib” software repository set up, run the pacman -S command below to install Steam on Arch Linux.

sudo pacman -S steam

Fedora/OpenSUSE

If you use Steam on Fedora or OpenSUSE Linux, you can install the app with software repositories included on the system. However, we suggest following the Flatpak installation instructions instead, as that version tends to work better.

Flatpak

After setting up the Flatpak runtime on your system, you can install Steam. Using the two flatpak commands below, set up Steam.
flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo
flatpak install flathub com.valvesoftware.Steam

With the Steam app set up, launch it and log into your account. Then, follow the step-by-step instructions below to get Dying Light working on Linux.

Step 1: Open up the “Steam” menu inside of the Steam app. Then, click on the “Settings” button to access the Steam settings area. Click on the “Steam Play” button and check both boxes to enable the feature.

Step 2: Find the “Store” button and click on it with the mouse. After selecting the “Store” button, you’ll be brought to the Steam Storefront. Select the search box, and type in “Dying Light.”

Step 3: Press the Enter key on the keyboard to view the search results in the Steam store. Then, select “Dying Light” in the results to go to the game’s Steam Storefront page.

Step 4: On the Dying Light Steam Storefront page, locate the green “Add to cart” button and click on it with the mouse to add the game to your Steam cart. Then, click on the Steam cart and purchase Dying Light for your account.

Step 5: After purchasing Dying Light for your account, click on the “Library” button to access the Steam library. Then, search for “Dying Light,” and right-click on it with the mouse.

Select ” Properties ” in the right-click menu,” followed by “Compatibility.” Check the box that says “Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool” to enable Proton support for Dying Light.

Step 6: Click on “Dying Light” in your Steam library, then locate the blue “INSTALL” button. Select this button to download and install the game on your Linux PC. Keep in mind the installation could take a while, as it is a large game.

Step 7: When the installation of Dying Light is complete, the blue “INSTALL” button will become a green “PLAY” button. Select the green “PLAY” button to start Dying Light on your Linux PC.
