How to install Tuxedo OS on your computer
Tuxedo OS is a custom Linux operating system for Tuxedo computers. It is based on KDE Plasma and has tons of optimizations for Tuxedo hardware. However, did you know that you can install and run Tuxedo on any PC? Here’s how to install it on your computer.
How to download Tuxedo OS
Tuxedo OS is available for download on the official website in the form of an ISO file. To get your hands on the latest release, head to the Tuxedo OS download page. Once there, grab the latest ISO.
Alternatively, if you are using Linux, and you wish to download the ISO file within the terminal, you can run the following wget command. This command will grab the Tuxedo OS ISO file and place it directly in your “Downloads” folder.
wget https://os.tuxedocomputers.com/TUXEDO-OS-2-202303070906.iso -O ~/Downloads/TUXEDO-OS-2-202303070906.iso
Once the download process is complete, you’ll be able to move to the next section of the guide to get going with Tuxedo OS.
How to create a Tuxedo OS installation USB
Installing Tuxedo OS on a computer requires an installation USB. There are quite a few ways to create installation USBs on a computer. In this guide, however, we’ll focus on the Etcher application, as it works on Mac, Windows, and Linux.
To get your hands on Etcher, go to the official website. Then, click on the “Download Etcher” button. With it downloaded, open up the app and follow the step-by-step instructions below to create your Tuxedo OS installation USB.
- Find the “Flash from file” button in the Etcher app, and click on it with the mouse. After selecting this button, browse your computer for the Tuxedo OS ISO image you downloaded previously.
- Insert your USB flash drive into your computer (this drive must be at least 4GB in size). After inserting the drive, find the “Select target” button, and click on it with the mouse. Use the pop-up menu to select the USB drive.
- Find the “Flash!” button, and click on it with the mouse. When you select this button, it will create the installation USB. However, keep in mind that the creation process will take some time to complete.
When Etcher has finished creating your installation USB, reboot your computer into the BIOS. Configure your BIOS to boot from USB so that you can access the Tuxedo OS installation tool.
How to install Tuxedo OS
To install Tuxedo OS, start by selecting your language on the setup screen. Tuxedo OS is made in Germany, so the installer defaults to German. After you’ve chosen the language, select the “Next” button to move to the next page.
On the next page in the Tuxedo OS installer, you’ll need to select your time zone. Using the map, select your time zone. When you’ve chosen your time zone, click on the “Next” button to move to the next page in the installer.
Following your time zone, you’ll need to choose a keyboard layout. By default, the Tuxedo OS installer should detect your layout based on your locale (time zone). However, if it doesn’t, browse through the available layouts to set your preference. When done selecting a keyboard layout, click the “Next” button to move to the next page.
After selecting your layout, Tuxedo will restart briefly. It’ll then show you a desktop. Double-click on the “Install TUXEDO OS” icon on the desktop to resume the installation process. Do not reboot your PC! If you do, you’ll have to start the entire installation process over.
In the installer, you’ll again need to select your language. Do so. Then, click the “Next” button to continue to the next page. You will have to choose your method of installation. Select “Erase disk” for the best results. Then, click on the “Next” button to move to the next step of the Tuxedo OS installation process.
On the next page, after setting up your installation type, you must configure your username, your password, and your computer name. In the “What is your name” box, enter your full name.
After entering your full name, enter your username in the username box, your computer name in the computer name box, and your password in the password box. When you’ve configured everything, click the “Next” button to move to the next page in the installer.
With your username, computer name, etc. configured, you’ll see an overview of what the installer will do to your computer. Read the overview. When done reading, find the “Install” button, and click on it with the mouse to install Tuxedo OS on your computer.
When the installation is complete, reboot your computer. Upon rebooting, you’ll be ready-to-use Tuxedo OS. Enjoy!
