How to install Neptune Linux on your computer

Neptune is a Linux distribution for desktops based on Debian Stable. It uses the KDE Plasma 5 desktop environment and aims to deliver an elegant, functional multimedia operating system for users. Here’s how to install Neptune Linux on your computer.

Downloading Neptune Linux

You must download the latest Neptune Linux release before attempting to install it on your computer. Head to the official Neptune Linux website to get your hands on the latest Neptune ISO. Once there, find the blue “Download Neptune” button, and select it with the mouse.

Upon selecting the “Download” button, you’ll be taken to the download page. Next, choose one of the “Download ISO” buttons to download the latest release of Neptune Linux to your computer.

Creating a Neptune Linux installation USB

Once you’ve downloaded the latest Neptune Linux ISO file, you’ll need to create an installation USB. There are many ways to make an installation USB on a computer. In this guide, we’ll focus on using the Etcher application.

Why Etcher? The program is cross-platform. As it is cross-platform, it works similarly on Linux desktops, MacOS computers, and Windows PCs. Download Etcher here and launch it on your computer.

With Etcher open, follow the step-by-step instructions below to create a Neptune Linux installation USB.

Step 1: Select the “Flash from file” button in Etcher. Then, use the pop-up window to browse for the Neptune Linux ISO file downloaded to your computer previously.

Step 2: Insert your USB flash drive into the USB port of your computer. Then, click on the “Select target” button. After clicking on the “Select target” button, choose your USB flash drive.

Step 3: Find the “Flash!” button in Etcher, and click on it with the mouse. When you select this button, Etcher will begin creating the Neptune Linux installation USB.

When the creation process is complete, close Etcher, then reboot your computer into the BIOS and configure it to boot from USB so that you can install Neptune Linux.

Installing Neptune Linux

After booting up Neptune Linux from the USB, you’ll see a live desktop. Locate the “Install Neptune” icon on the desktop and double-click on it to open up the installer. Then, follow the step-by-step instructions below to get Neptune working.

Step 1: You must select your location on the map in the Neptune Installer. Choosing your location will tell your new installation of Neptune what timezone it should use. When done, click “Next.”

Step 2: After setting your timezone in Neptune, you’ll need to choose a keyboard layout. By default, the system should detect your keyboard. If it doesn’t, however, select one from the options available. Click “Next” when done.

Step 3: Once the keyboard layout is chosen, it is time to select a storage device to install on. Select your storage device under “Select storage device.” Then, choose “Erase disk.” Or, select “Manual partitioning” if you know what you are doing.

Step 4: After choosing your storage device, click on the “Encrypt system” box if you wish to encrypt your installation of Neptune Linux. When you’ve made your choice, click the “Next” button to continue.

Step 5: You’ll now need to enter your full name, your username (login), your computer name, and the password for your user. Fill out your name, username, computer name, and password.

Once you’ve set up your computer name, user account, and user password. You can select “Log in automatically without asking for the password” to log in automatically. This is an optional feature.

Step 6: Click “Choose a password for the administrator account” and set a password for logging in as an administrator. Alternatively, if you wish to use the same password you’ve set up for your user account, check the “Use the same password for the administrator account.”

Step 7: When your user account is set up, Neptune will show a complete overview of what will happen once the installation begins. It is highly recommended that you read this overview thoroughly, as it explains everything well.

Once you’ve finished reading the installation overview, click on the “Install” button to begin the installation process for Neptune Linux.

Step 8: Upon selecting the “Install” button, Neptune Linux will begin installing on your computer. Depending on your hard drive speed, this process will take a few minutes. When the installation is complete, reboot your computer, unplug the USB, and use Neptune Linux!
