How to install Linux Mint 21.2

Linux Mint 21.2 is out, and with it comes two-tone folders, better-looking tooltips, improved keyboard navigation, better image format support, bug fixes, a new driver manager, and much more. Here’s how to install the new version of Linux Mint on your desktop or laptop.

How to download Linux Mint 21.2

You’ll need to download Linux Mint 21.2 before you can install it. Head over to LinuxMint.com. Once you’re there, look for the download button next to “Linux Mint 21.2,” and select it with the mouse. When you click on this button, you’ll be brought to the official download page.

On the download page, select your edition. The editions are Cinnamon, Mate, and Xfce. When you’ve made your selection, click on the “Download” button next to the edition. Then, scroll down and select a mirror to download Linux Mint 21.2. For best results, it is recommended to select a mirror near you.

Alternatively, if you want to save the Linux Mint project some bandwidth, select the torrent option on the download page. However, be aware that you will need to install a torrent client before attempting to download Linux Mint 21.2 in this way.

How to create a Linux Mint 21.2 installation USB

Linux Mint 21.2 needs to be copied to a USB flash drive to install onto a computer. Thankfully, setting up a Linux Mint USB installation is easy to do. To start, head over to the official Etcher website and download the program for Windows, Linux, or Mac OS. Once it is downloaded, open it up and plug in a USB flash drive into your computer.

With the Etcher app open, follow the step-by-step instructions below to get your Linux Mint 21.2 USB installer working.

  1. Find the “Select image” button, and click on it with the mouse. Once you’ve selected the button, browse your computer for the Linux Mint 21.2 ISO image, and select it. Upon selecting the ISO image, Etcher will use add it to the current project.
  2. After adding the ISO file to the Etcher app, click the button to select your target. Be sure to choose your USB flash drive as the target.
  3. Find the “Flash!” button, and click on it with the mouse. When you select this button, the flashing process will begin, and your Linux Mint 21.2 installation USB will be created.

When the process is complete, reboot your computer and load it into the BIOS. Once it is in the BIOS, configure it to boot from the USB. When it’s successfully booted, you’ll be able to install Linux Mint 21.2 on your computer.

How to install Linux Mint 21.2

To start the installation of Linux Mint 21.2, find the “Install Linux Mint” icon on the desktop, and click on it. When you select this button, the Linux Mint installer will open. Select your language in the installer, and select the “Continue” button to move to the next page.

On the next page, you’ll need to choose your keyboard layout. By default, Mint should do this automatically. However, if it isn’t, look through the list and choose the language that works best for you. Click the “Continue” button to move to the next page.

On the next page, choose the box next to “Install multimedia codecs” if you wish to install these. Otherwise, leave it blank. When you’ve made your selection, click the “Continue” button to move to the next page.

You’ll now need to choose your installation type. For best results, choose the “Erase disk and install Linux Mint” option. This will erase the hard drive you select, and set up Linux Mint on it. Alternatively, if you’re an expert, feel free to choose the “Something else” button. When you’ve made your selection, click the “Install” button.

On the next page in the Mint installer, you must choose your time zone. You can do this by selecting your location on the global map. When you’ve made your selection, click the “Continue” button to move to the next page in the installer.

With your timezone configured, it’s time to set up your Linux Mint user account and password. Find the “Your name” box, and enter your full name. Then, enter your computer’s name, and your password. When everything is filled out, click the “Continue” button.

When your username is configured, Mint will finish installing. This will take a few minutes. When the process is complete, reboot to use your new Linux Mint 21.2 system.
