How to install Krita on Pop!_OS 22.04

Krita is an excellent painting application for Linux. If you’re using Pop_OS 22.04, you may wish to install this application. Thankfully, Krita is available in Pop_OS 22.04. Here’s how to install it on your system.

Installing Krita on Pop_OS 22.04 – GUI (Apt)

Installing Krita on Pop_OS 22.04 is best done through the Pop Shop with Apt (DEB package). To start the installation on your system, start by opening up the Pop Shop. Click on the rocket icon in the dock to launch it.

With the Pop Shop open, follow the steps below to get Krita installed.

Step 1: Find the “Search Apps”  search box, and click on it with the mouse. Then, type in “Krita.”

Step 2: Upon typing in Krita, you’ll see search results in the Pop Shop. Click on the result with “Krita” to access the app’s Pop Shop page.

Step 3: On the Krita Pop Shop page, find the drop-down menu, and change it from “flathub (flatpak) to Ubuntu (deb)”. Changing it to “Ubuntu (deb)” will allow you to install it via Apt.

Step 4: Find the “Install” button on the Krita Pop Shop page, and click on it with the mouse. When you select this button, a pop-up window will appear and ask you for your password.

Enter your user account password and select the “Authenticate” button with the mouse.

Step 5: Upon selecting the “Authenticate” button, the Pop Shop will begin installing Krita to your Pop_OS 22.04 system. The installation process should only take a few moments to complete.

Step 6: Once Krita is installed, you’ll find the “Open” button inside of the Pop Shop. Click on it to start up Krita. Alternatively, you can launch the Krita application on your Pop_OS 22.04 system by searching for “Krita” in the applications menu.

Uninstalling

If at any time you wish to uninstall the DEB version of Krita from the Pop Shop, do the following: find the “Installed” section of the Pop Shop and look for the Krita app.

Once you’ve found Krita, click on it. Then, select the “Uninstall” button. Clicking on this button will remove the app from your computer.

Installing Krita on Pop_OS 22.04 – Terminal (Apt)

If you’re not a fan of the Pop Shop, you can also install the Krita application with Apt via the command line. To start the installation, you’ll need to launch a terminal window. Press Ctrl + Alt + T on the keyboard. Or, search for “Terminal” in the app menu.

With the terminal window open, enter the apt install command and install the “krita” package.

sudo apt install krita

When you enter the command above, Pop_OS will ask you for your password. Please use the password that you selected during the Pop_OS 22.04 installation process. After entering your password, press the Enter key to submit it.

With your password submitted, the terminal will collect all packages to install. It’ll then ask you to press the Y key to continue with the installation. Press the button to set up Krita on your system.

Uninstalling

If you wish to uninstall Krita via the terminal, do the following: First, type in the command below.

sudo apt remove krita

After typing the command above, press the Y key to confirm you wish to uninstall.

Installing Krita on Pop_OS 22.04 – GUI (Flatpak)

To install Krita on Pop_OS 22.04 as a Flatpak via the GUI, start by launching Pop Shop by clicking on the Pop Shop icon in the dock. Once it is open, follow the steps below.

Step 1: Find the “Search Apps” box and click on it with the mouse. Then, type in “Krita” with the keyboard.

Step 2: Look through the search results for Krita. Once you’ve located it, select it with the mouse to access the app’s Pop Shop page.

Step 3: On the Krita Pop Shop page, find the drop-down menu under the app and ensure it is set to “flathub (flatpak).”

Step 4: Find the “Install” button next to the Krita app in Pop Shop and select it with the mouse to download and install the software to your computer. Once the installation process is complete, select the “Open” button to start it up.

Uninstalling

Do you wish to uninstall the Flatpak release of Krita from Pop_OS 22.04? Here’s how. First, find the “Installed” section in the Pop Shop. Then, look through the list of installed software for “Krita.”

Select the “Uninstall” button to remove the Krita app from your computer.

Installing Krita on Pop_OS 22.04 – Terminal (Flatpak)

It is possible to install Krita on Pop_OS 22.04 as a Flatpak from the command line. To do it, open up a terminal window by pressing Ctrl + Alt + T on the keyboard (or the app menu).

Once the terminal window is open, use the flatpak install command to install the Krita program on your computer.

flatpak install flathub org.kde.krita

After entering the command above, Flatpak will ask for a password. Enter your password and press the Y button to install Krita via Flatpak.

Uninstalling

If you wish to uninstall Krita as a Flatpak from the terminal, simply run the following flatpak remove command.

flatpak remove flathub org.kde.krita
