How to install DaVinci Resolve 17 on Linux

Davinci Resolve is a professional, high-end non-linear video editing tool. Best of all, it is available on Linux. So, if you require a good video editor, follow these installation instructions below to get Davinci Resolve to work on your system.

Downloading Davinci Resolve 17 on Linux

In order to download Davinci Resolve 17 on your computer, you’ll have to create an account on the website. To start, head over to the official Davinci Resolve website. Once there, scroll down to “Free Download Now.”

The “Free Download Now” option will allow you to get the free home edition. Alternatively, if you prefer to get the “Davinci Resolve Studio” version, click on the “Buy Online Now” button.

After selecting the “Free Download Now” button, a pop-up window will appear. In this pop-up window, you’ll see “Mac OS X,” “Windows,” and “Linux.” Select the “Linux” button to start the Linux download.

Upon selecting the “Linux” download” button, a “Your Details” window will appear. Enter your first name, last name, company (optional), email, phone number, country, state, and city.

Select the “Register & Download” button to download the Davinci Resolve Linux installer with all of your information filled out.

Installing Davinci Resolve 17 on Linux

Open up a terminal window after downloading Davinci Resolve 17 to your computer. Unsure about how to open up a terminal window on the Linux desktop? Press Ctrl + Alt + T on the keyboard. Or, search for “Terminal” in the app menu and launch it that way.

With the terminal window open and ready to use, run the CD command and move into the “Downloads” directory where Davinci Resolve was downloaded to previously.

cd ~/Downloads/

Once inside the “Downloads” directory, run the unzip command to unzip the Davinci Resolve ZIP file containing the Linux installer.

unzip DaVinci_Resolve_*_Linux.zip

If you do not have “unzip,” install it with the commands below.

Ubuntu

Run the apt install command below to get the Unzip tool set up on Ubuntu.

sudo apt install unzip

Debian

If you need to set up Unzip on Debian, run the apt-get install command below.

sudo apt-get install unzip

Arch Linux

Those on Arch Linux can get the latest Unzip app set up by running the pacman -S command.

sudo pacman -S unzip

Fedora

If you’re a Fedora Linux user, you’ll be able to get the latest Unzip app set up on your computer using the dnf install command.

sudo dnf install unzip

OpenSUSE

On OpenSUSE Linux, you’ll be able to set up the Unzip program using the zypper install command.

sudo zypper install unzip

After unzipping the Davinci Resolve ZIP file, the installer file will be added to your “Downloads” folder. You must run the chmod command and update the permissions to this file.

chmod +x DaVinci_Resolve_*_Linux.run

With the permissions updated, start up the installer on your computer using the following command.

./DaVinci_Resolve_*_Linux.run

Upon running the command above, a GUI installation tool will appear on the screen, and you’ll see an “Introduction” screen, followed by a message. Read the message, then click the “Next” button.

Once you’ve selected the “Next” button, the Davinci Resolve installation tool will show you an “About Davinci Resolve 17” message. Read the message. When you’ve finished reading everything, select the “Next” button.

Following the “About” message, you’ll see the Davinci Resolve “License Agreement.” You must agree to the agreement by checking the box next to “I agree to the terms and conditions of the license agreement.” Click the “Next” button when done.

You’ll be brought to the “Ready to install” window with the license agreement read. Select the “Start Install” button to start up the installation process on your Linux computer. Feel free to select the ‘Show detailed Log’ box to view more info during the installation process.

You’ll see a “Finish” button when the installation is complete. Select this button to close the installation tool.

Uninstalling Davinci Resolve from your Linux PC

If you’d like to uninstall Davinci Resolve, start by launching a terminal window. Run the rm command to delete the folder once a terminal window is open and ready to use. This folder has all of the application data on your computer.

sudo rm -rf /opt/resolve

Next, you’ll need to get rid of the desktop file in the /usr/share/applications/ folder. These files must be deleted. Otherwise, a Davinci Resolve shortcut will always appear in your app menu, even if the application data is gone.

Note: uninstalling desktop shortcuts is not required. If you plan to re-install Resolve, later on, feel free to skip the shortcut uninstallation instructions below.

sudo rm -rf /usr/share/applications/com.blackmagicdesign.*

When both commands have run in the terminal, Davinci Resolve 17 will be uninstalled from your Linux PC.
