How to play Far Cry 5 on Linux
Far Cry 5 is an FPS developed by Ubisoft. It’s the fifth installment in the Far Cry series. Here’s how you can get Far Cry 5 working on your Linux PC.
Getting Far Cry 5 working on Linux
Far Cry 5 is rated “Gold” on ProtonDB and works relatively well on most Linux operating systems. However, users can only get the game working via Steam, so the Steam app must be installed.
Install Steam
The Steam Linux app is widely supported, and you’ll be able to get it working on most OSes. Open up a terminal window by pressing Ctrl + Alt + T on the keyboard to start the installation. Or, search for “Terminal” in the app menu and launch it that way.
The installation can begin with the terminal window open and ready to use. Using the installation instructions down below, set up the Steam app on your computer.
Ubuntu
Run the following apt install command to get the Steam app working on your Ubuntu system.
sudo apt install steam
Debian
Setting up the Steam app on Debian requires downloading the official Steam DEB package from Valve and installing it. To get your hands on the Steam DEB, use the following wget download command.
wget https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/client/installer/steam.deb
The installation can begin after downloading the latest Steam DEB package to your computer. Using the dpkg command, set up the Steam package.
sudo dpkg -i steam.deb
During the installation process, you may notice some errors. To fix these problems, you’ll need to run the apt-get install -f command.
sudo apt-get install -f
Arch Linux
Steam is available to Arch Linux users. However, the “multilib” software repository must be enabled first. To enable this software repository on your computer, open up the /etc/pacman.conf file in a text editor (as root).
Find the “multilib” line and remove the # symbol from in front of it. Then, remove the # symbol from the lines directly below. When editing is finished, save the edits. Then, use the pacman -Syy command to resync your system.
sudo pacman -Syy
Finally, install the latest version of Steam on your Arch Linux system.
sudo pacman -S steam
Fedora/OpenSUSE
Those on Fedora and OpenSUSE Linux will be able to install Steam through software repositories included with the operating system. However, the Flatpak release of Steam works much better, so we suggest following those instructions instead.
Flatpak
To get the Steam app working as a Flatpak, first install the Flatpak runtime on your computer. Set up the Flatpak runtime on Linux by following our in-depth guide on the subject.
After setting up the Flatpak runtime, install the latest Steam version on your computer by entering the two commands below.
flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo
flatpak install flathub com.valvesoftware.Steam
