How to install Calligra Words on Linux

Calligra Words is a wordprocessor from the KDE project. It allows for frame-based editing, document embedding, user interface customization, and other excellent features. Here’s how to set up Calligra Words on your Linux system.

Ubuntu installation instructions

Since Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, Calligra Words has been available for users to install. So, if you’re an Ubuntu user and want to install this app on your computer, here’s how. To start, launch a terminal window.

Unsure of how to launch a terminal window on the Ubuntu desktop? Press Ctrl + Alt + T on the keyboard. Alternatively, you’ll be able to open up a terminal window by searching for “Terminal” in the app menu.

With the terminal window open on the Ubuntu desktop, use the apt install command and set up the “calligrawords” package.

sudo apt install calligrawords

Upon writing the command above into a terminal window, Ubuntu will ask you for a password. Using your keyboard, type in the password for your user account. Then, press the Enter key to submit it.

With your password submitted, Ubuntu will collect all packages related to Calligra Words. Then, it will ask you to press the Y button to install the software. Do so to set up Calligra Words on Ubuntu.

Debian installation instructions

So long as you are using Debian 11 Bullseye, Debian 10 Buster, or Debian Sid (the rolling development version,) you’ll be able to set up Calligra Words. To start the installation, launch a terminal window on the desktop.

To launch a terminal window on the Debian desktop, press Ctrl + Alt + T on the keyboard to open up a terminal window. Or, search for “Terminal” in the app menu and launch it that way.

With the terminal window ready to use on Debian, run the apt-get install command to install the “calligrawords” package onto your computer.

sudo apt-get install calligrawords

Once you’ve used the apt-get install command above, Debian will ask you for your password. Using the keyboard, enter your user account password. Press the Enter key on the keyboard to continue.

Now that you’ve entered your password, Debian will collect all packages related to Calligra Words and get them ready for installation. After that, Debian will ask you to press the Y key to confirm you wish to install Calligra Words.

Arch Linux installation instructions

Sadly, Calligra Words is not available for installation on Arch Linux as a stand-alone package. However, if you install the complete Calligra suite onto Arch Linux via the “calligra” package, the Calligra Words wordprocessor is included.

To install the Calligra suite on your Arch Linux system, start by launching a terminal window on the desktop. Once the terminal window is open and ready to use, run the pacman -S command to install the “calligra” package.

sudo pacman -S calligra

After writing the command above, Arch Linux will ask you for your password. Using the keyboard, enter your user account’s password. Then, press the Enter key to submit it.

Arch Linux will ask you to press Y to confirm you wish to install the software onto your computer to get Calligra Words working with your password submitted.

Fedora installation instructions

The Calligra Words application is available for Fedora 35 and 34 and Rawhide. To get the app working on your Fedora system, start by launching a terminal window on the Fedora desktop. For example, you can launch a terminal by pressing Ctrl + Alt + T on the keyboard. Or, search for “Terminal” in the app menu and launch it that way.

Use the dnf install command below to install the “calligra-words” package onto your Fedora system with the terminal window.

sudo dnf install calligra-words

Upon entering the command above, Fedora will ask you for your password. Using the keyboard, enter your user account password. Then, press the Enter key to submit it.

Once you’ve submitted your password, Fedora will collect all packages related to the installation. It’ll then ask you to press the Y key to confirm you wish to install Calligra Words. Do so to get the app working.

OpenSUSE installation instructions

Those on OpenSUSE Tumbleweed and OpenSUSE Leap 15.3 will be able to get the Calligra Words application up and running relatively quickly. You’ll need to open up a terminal window to start the installation process.

On OpenSUSE, you’ll be able to launch a terminal window on the desktop by pressing Ctrl + Alt + T on the keyboard. Alternatively, you can search for “Terminal” in the app menu and open it that way.

With the terminal window open, the installation of Calligra Words can begin. Using the zypper install command, set up the “calligra-words” package on your computer.

sudo zypper install calligra-words

When you enter the install command above, OpenSUSE Linux will ask you for your password. Using the keyboard, write out your user account password. Then, press the Enter key to submit it.

Now that your password is entered, OpenSUSE will prompt you to press the Y key to confirm that you wish to install Calligra Words. Do so to get the app set up on your computer.
