Like the new Metro UI of Windows Phone and wish you could have it on your Android phone? Good news – you can do that! Windows Phone Android is a new app that brings the popular Windows Phone 7 Metro UI to your Android devices, making use of the operating system’s open nature that lets you replace even its home screen interface. More details and download links after the jump.

Who wouldn’t want to use the Windows Phone Metro UI? Everyone we have come across who has used it even once is in love with the concept, the fluidity and the natural feel of the UI of Microsoft’s latest mobile operating system. However, is Windows Phone 7 mature enough as an operating system for a power user to switch to from Android? Not yet. Still, that doesn’t keep us Android users to want a taste of Metro on our devices.

Probably the best thing about Android is its endless capacity for customization, right down to the operating system’s main home screen interface – the launcher. You can replace your entire home screen UI by merely installing a different launcher, and Windows Phone Android is one such launcher that is based on the Metro tiles look and feel introduced in Windows Phone 7.

There are two versions of Windows Phone Android currently available: Lite and Pro. The Lite version is free, while the Pro version costs $2.99. Both are available from the Android Market and can be grabbed from the links provided at the end of this article.

The Lite version comes complete with a status bar, contains a total of 12 tiles and has four colors available (for both dark and light themes). At the moment, it isn’t clear what additional features are offered by the pro version (we have tested only the free Lite version) but the Market page suggests that more features will be added to it soon (probably live tile support?)

At present, there is no support for live tiles in the Lite version– all the tiles are simply static program shortcuts for installed apps and can be added or removed by swiping to the screen on right. Feel free to take it for a test drive on your phone.  It requires Android 2.1 or later. For best results, the program should be used on phones with a screen resolution of 480×800 pixels, and is known to not work on Samsung Fascinate and a few Motorola phones, so your mileage may vary depending on your device.
