How To Root Acer Iconia A500 Honeycomb Tablet
We have confirmation that the Acer Iconia Honeycomb tablet has been rooted! The 1Ghz dual core powerhouse has only been released since a few days and we already have root access thanks to XDA-Developers forum members monki-magic and Chainfire. We shall be quick with this one so read on for more on how to root your Acer Iconia.
Root access has been achieved through a modified version of the Gingerbreak App that was covered by us earlier and allowed you to root most Gingerbread based devices. However that app has been modified for the Acer Iconia and it works like a charm. So let’s get on with some good old rooting!
Disclaimer: Please follow this guide at your own risk. AddictiveTips will not be liable if your device gets damaged or bricked during the process.
Requirements:
- ADB installed on your system. See our guide on what is ADB and how to install it.
- OI File Manager and Busybox.
- Unknown Sources enabled in Settings > Applications.
- USB debugging enabled in Settings > Applications > Development.
- Modified Gingerbreak app, downloadable from the XDA thread linked at the end.
- An SD card inserted in your device.
Instructions:
- To begin, open command prompt or terminal and enter the following command:
adb push c:\Gingerbreak-v1.20.apk /data/local
replacing c:\ with the path where you downloaded the Gingerbreak-v1.20.apk file.
- Now rotate the tablet’s display to portrait mode and lock the screen to this mode.
- Launch the OI File Manager and browse to /data/local/Gingerbreak-v1.20.apk. Install the APK file.
- Now launch Gingerbreak and select Root Device. Note that you need to be in portrait mode, other wise the app will force close.
- The device will reboot after a few minutes when done rooting. Additionaly after the phone reboots, launch the Busybox app which will install itself on the device now.
You can see our guide on how to use the Gingerbreak tool if you wish. For updates and queries, visit the forum thread at XDA-Developers.

I have an Acer Iconia A100 running 3.2 – Can that be rooted?
15 minutes later nothing. I had updated my A500 to Honeycomb 3.2 which may have been the problem.
Gingerbreak requires a MicroSD card to be inserted, and may erase it. Also I couldn’t get it to work from /local/data/ so I put it on the SD card and installed it from there. It is running right now. Hopefully it works.
Question
Before rooting was the tablet running gingerbread or honeycomb?
