Fix iBooks After iOS 4 Jailbreak

iOS 4 was recently released for most variants of the iPhone and iPod Touch and while the update seemed to be great and got jailbroken soon as well, there were some post-jailbreak glitches. After many users were able to jailbreak iOS 4 on their iPhone 3G/ 3GS and iPod touch 2G using redsn0w, most of them complained regarding iBooks not working after the jailbreak. The iPhone dev team has decided to respond, and has released a redsn0w 0.9.5b 5-4 upgrade that addresses the issue and and fixes the iBooks problem. Update: A fix is available for those who jailbroke using PwnageTool 4.0 as well. Read on for more information on both.

iBooks is a great piece of software and makes reading books on your Apple device an absolute pleasure. That’s why when users found out that jaikbreaking their devices rendered iBooks useless, there were frequent widespread complaints about the issue. This issue not only applied to the devices jailbroken with redsn0w, but also to those jailbroken with PwnageTool 4.0. Luckily, we’ve got fixes for both.

redsn0w Fix:

You will need to run the new redsn0w 0.9.5b 5-4 in order to ratify the iBooks glitch on your iPhone 3G/3GS and iPod Touch 2G. According to Dev Team the official change statement goes like:

There’s a new redsn0w beta (links were changed above) that should fix any iBooks problems people were seeing.  Just run this new version 0.9.5b5-4 and deselect Cydia (you don’t want to reinstall Cydia over itself).

This will attempt to jailbreak your device again with the proper fixes that are required to get iBooks working even after the jailbreak. As mentioned in the instructions, if you have already jailbroken your device, deselect Cydia when jailbreaking, since Cydia is already installed and installing it over itself again might pose problems. On the other hand, if you haven’t yet jailbroken your device, make sure to keep ‘Cydia’ selected.

PwnageTool Fix:

If you are having trouble with iBooks on your iPhone 3G/3GS and iPod Touch 2G after jailbreaking with PwnageTool 4.0, you needn’t worry about that either, as a new version i.e. PwnageTool Ver 4.01, is now available that fixes this issue for you. You can download the new version of PwnageTool Version 4.01 for Mac (https://www.iphone-storage.de/PwnageTool_4.01.dmg) here. Simply follow its accompanied instructions and you will have a jailbroken device with iBooks fully working without a glitch.

Did the methods work for you? Did you run into any issues? Know of a method to fix the iBooks issue after jailbreaking with some method other than these two? Don’t forget to post it in the comments below.
