How to sign in to Microsoft 365 Admin Center

Microsoft 365 is a collection of apps but it’s not the same Office suite that Microsoft sold a few years ago. The current Microsoft 365 has lots of different online services and features integrated into it. It’s gone from simple desktop file editing to a collaborative tool that can create and edit files, and share them.

Microsoft 365 admin center

The Microsoft 364 admin center is where various permissions, groups, and settings for a Microsoft 365 account are managed. A Microsoft 365 account can be a company account i.e. an enterprise license is in use, or it can be an individual account i.e. a home or personal license is in use. In both cases, users can access the admin center but for home/personal license users, it gets a bit tricky.

1. Microsoft 365 admin center for Enterprise users

If you use an Enterprise or business license for Microsoft 365, make sure you know which account is set as the admin. This is generally the account that was used to purchase the license but other admin accounts can be added later.

  1. Visit the Microsoft 365 Admin center.
  2. Sign in with your company/corporate/education account.
  3. You will be able to access the admin center.

2. Microsoft 365 admin center for Home/personal users

Before you can sign into the Microsoft 365 admin center as a Home/personal user, you need to find what your admin account is.

Find admin email

The admin email used to sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center when you’ve bought a personal/home license, is NOT the same as the email you used to purchase the license. Instead, Microsoft 365 generates a new admin account on the following pattern.

admin @ [your email address] .onmicrosoft.com

Your email address will be formatted as well so that all symbols are removed from it. For example, the email myemail@email.com will be changed to myemailemailcom. The resulting admin email will be;

admin@myemailemailcom.onmicrosoft.com

The password may not be the same as your account’s password but give it a try. If it doesn’t work, recover the password. The recovery email will be sent to the email you used to purchase a Microsoft 365 license.

Sign into Microsoft 365 admin center

  1. Visit the Microsoft 365 admin center.
  2. Sign in with the Microsoft generated admin account.
  3. You will be able to access and customize the Microsoft 365 admin center.

Conclusion

Although both personal and enterprise users have access to the Microsoft 365 admin center, the options the two see in the admin panel will differ. This is because both have access to different types of features. An enterprise user will generally see all features that a personal user will but a personal user will not see the same options/features that an Enterprise user will see. Some features may only be listed but not active. A user will be required to upgrade a service or subscribe to an additional service e.g., Exchange server, to be able to use it.
