What does NBD mean? Learn How to Use NBD in Messaging

Have you ever experienced one of those awkward chat moments when the person on the other end sends an abbreviation, and you have absolutely no idea what it means?

With the internet culture growing faster than a dog with a bone, people are constantly inventing new slang to spice up their chat and finding new ways to use existing ones.

If that’s why you’re asking, “what does NBD mean”? Don’t worry; we totally get it. And in this article, you will learn what NBD means in chat, how to use the abbreviation, and when to use it.

NBD- No Big Deal?

Yes, you guessed right, NBD stands for No Big Deal.

People often use this slang in chat to downplay the burden of favor or gift they receive.

Let’s say you just helped someone fix their car for free, and they are sooo thankful that it feels embarrassing; you can say “nbd” to imply to the person that it wasn’t really that big of a favor from you.

If you’re like Melanie in The Babysitter: Killer Queen in a face-to-face conversation, you can even pull it off with the magical side-eye look in this clip for maximum effect.

But you could use the rolling triple rolling eye-ball emoji if it’s a chat. That’s what I’ll do!

Another way to use NBD is to write it at the end of a statement to not sound like you’re bragging. You know, when you want to seem humble despite considerable success. Look at this example.

I scored straight As in my SAT… nbd.”

This attempts to pretend that scoring straight As on the SAT is not significant when the other person knows it is a big deal. Humblebragging is what most people call it. And NBD often makes for good slang to execute this.

Knowing the various versions of the slang can be frustrating if you are learning how to use NBD for the first time.

Fortunately, there are no wrong ways to use these shorter NBD versions in chat. Whether you say No biggie or No bigs, most people already understand that you mean No big deal.

And using these shorter versions will certainly not downplay its effect. So it doesn’t matter if you’re humblebragging or being humble for real; your conversation partner will get the message.

How to use NBD in Messaging

To ensure the other person does not misinterpret your message, you might need to use NBD according to the context of your chat. This is because NBD might mean different things to different people- especially those not really in tune with these abbreviations.

So, imagine your account manager from the bank says: “This issue would be resolved, NBD.”

You might be wrong to think they meant resolving the issue is No Big Deal when they actually meant that it would be resolved on the Next Business Day. So, you might want to ask for some clarification there to avoid a red-faced moment.

You can also use NBD as an alternative for longer slang that often has a similar meaning, such as: Don’t worry about it, Get over it, or even the popular Italian lingo; Forget about it. NBD (or No biggie and No bigs) is a snappy and faster way to pass the same message.
