Mountain Queen Reviews – What are people saying?

Lhakpa Sehpera in action

Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa was released with a positive reception from both critics and viewers. With a 100% rating from the critics and 91% from the audience on Rotten Tomatoes, the sentiment around this documentary is mostly praise.

“Some segments give astonishing views of her ascents, including the most recent, with high-altitude photography by Matthew Irving. Lhakpa sometimes crosses a crevasse on a narrow ladder and at times ascends in the dark of night. (An EPK of how they got those shots would be fascinating.) Meanwhile, Shiny waits at base camp, worrying that her mother, at a camp above, might run out of oxygen as the weather delays her progress for days.” The Hollywood Reporter praised the beauty of its scenes in its review.

In a positive review, Variety admired Sherpa’s determination and the director’s clear vision: “In Walker’s hands, it becomes clear that Sherpa’s genuine humility and positive outlook emerged from confronting seemingly unsurmountable challenges, which she bent to her will by way of unwavering resolve.”

Danny Leigh from the Financial Times was also impressed by Lucy Walker’s unique storytelling: “Lucy Walker has form for telling enlightening stories at extreme heights… Here again, compelling, raw material is nimbly shaped. Walker’s lens is wide enough for nuance.”

On the other hand, the audience reviews on Rotten Tomatoes confirm that they are on the same page as critics. For instance, Karl W called it a “Tremendous film” and recommended that people should watch the documentary film without reading anything else about it to experience its maximum effect.
