House of the Dragon release date, trailer, and how to watch
The new game of thrones show has been generating a lot of buzz, especially now that the trailer and release date are out. Here are all the details that you need to know about the George R.R. Martin helmed spinoff.
After much speculation over the years, there is finally a prequel to one of the most loved shows of our time, Game of Thrones. Since its end in 2019, fans have been eagerly waiting for more fire and epic medieval clashes. With this new Game of Thrones show, consider your prayers answered! This spinoff, which is based on Martin’s novel ‘Fire & Blood’ will transport viewers roughly 200 years before Game of Thrones to a time when the Targaryen bloodline ruled Westeros. In this thrilling story about power, rivalry, prestige, and Dragonstone, the ancient dragon rider clan takes center stage.
In his blog, Martin explained that the show has been in development for many years now and is set primarily in Westeros, featuring a time of significant political turmoil. The series depicts a turbulent period in House Targaryen’s history, one that pitted sibling against sibling and dragon against dragon. The point of contention, of course, is who should rule the Iron Throne. It recounts the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold that iconic seat, all the way up to the civil war that nearly tore their dynasty apart.
Is the Game of Thrones prequel canceled?
Before House of Dragons was officially released as the new Game of Thrones show, there was chatter about another abandoned prequel series. Apparently, HBO spent approximately $30 million on the pilot episode before it was scrapped. Obviously, with the legacy GoT had left, the pressure to get it right was immense and ultimately the executives at HBO pulled the plug on it.
Back in 2019 when the series was shelved, we learned on the same day that a 10-episode season of an entirely different prequel named “House of the Dragon” had been approved. After immense confusion and the rumor mill running overtime, the House of the Dragon release date has been revealed and we can’t wait!
When does House of the Dragon come out?
On October 2019, HBO had made the first announcement about the much-awaited Game of Thrones prequel. Later in January 2020, the HBO President of Programming Casey Bloys went on record ambiguously saying that the show would be out sometime in 2022 since it was large and complicated.
Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, this prediction is now finally coming true. House of the Dragon’s release date was confirmed to be August 21, 2022, when HBO (via WarnerMedia) issued a press release with the date alongside a poster of a giant glowing dragon egg about to crack. The 10-episode series will premiere on HBO and HBO Max and will air on a weekly basis. The series will premiere on Sky Atlantic and the streaming service NOW in the United Kingdom on August 22.
House of the Dragon release date:
- August 21, 2022 on HBO and HBO Max

House of the Dragon Trailer
The Game of Thrones prequel trailer was released on the 5th of October in 2021, providing fans with their first look at footage from the new Targaryen-centered series. It featured Matt Smith’s Prince Daemon Targaryen giving the voiceover, “Dreams didn’t make us kings — dragons did”. While there was a marked absence of dragons in the footage, fans did get a brief glimpse of this show’s version of the Iron Throne in the House of Dragons trailer.
