Frankenstein Filming Ends as Guillermo Del Toro’s Captivating Vision Comes to Life

One of Guillermo Del Toro’s favorite novels is Frankenstein written by Mary Shelley. Since 2007, Guillermo Del Toro has been public about his interest in making a faithful tragedy version of Frankenstein. In fact, he said that he would kill to make a movie based on this classic novel. However, he has expressed regret for turning down Universal’s offer to take over the Monster Universe, including popular classic stories such as Bride of Frankenstein, The Mummy, Dracula, Invisible Man, Creature from the Black Lagoon, and Wolf Man. “I’ve said no to things that are enormous, and I’ve never looked back. The only time I repent I didn’t do something was in 2007 when Universal, in an incredibly gentle and beautiful manner said, ‘Do you want to take over the Monster Universe?’ And they gave me the reins of several properties, and I didn’t do it. That I repent. So this is a confessional moment; I repent. That’s the only thing.” He said in an interview with TimesTalks.

But that is all in the past, and after many years of delays and hurdles in production, filming on a Guillermo Del Toro Frankenstein movie finally began on February 12, 2024. Then, after almost 8 months, he recently expressed joy and announced in a tweet that the filming is finally done: “Shooting has been completed on “F” – Joy!!!”

Guillermo Del Toro Frankenstein movie is a collaboration with Netflix, and he is both directing the movie and writing the screenplay. Del Toro is a highly celebrated director who has won many awards for his films including the best picture for 2017’s The Shape of Water. His work usually involves monsters and fascinating creatures with a unique sense of horror. So, he is perfect for creating a movie based on Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein. “It’s a movie I have been wanting to do for 50 years since I saw the first Frankenstein. I had an epiphany, and it’s basically a movie that required a lot of growth and a lot of tools that I couldn’t have done 10-20 years ago. Now I’m brave or crazy enough or something, and we’re gonna tackle it.” He said in an interview with Collider.

Jacob Elordi plays Frankenstein’s Monster, and Oscar Issac is Victor Frankenstein who made the Monster. But that’s not all; here is the full list of the known cast of Guillermo Del Toro Frankenstein movie:

Before filming began, Guillermo Del Toro invited most of the cast to a restaurant, and you can see them happy together in the picture below.

What Frankenstein is about?

Frankenstein

The movie is based on the classic 1818 novel, “Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus.” Victor Frankenstein, as a student of science, is obsessed with restoring life to the dead, and in the process, he manages to create a horrific creature. Guillermo Del Toro has said that the movie won’t be a direct retelling of the original story, but it will be a faithful adaptation.

“What I’m trying to do is take the myth and do something with it, but combining elements of Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein without making it just a classical myth of the monster. The best moments in my mind of Frankenstein, of the novel, are yet to be filmed.” He said to the Empire Magazine. The release date has not been announced yet, but with the filming done, we can expect to get more information about it and, hopefully a trailer very soon.
