Is the iPhone 13 Waterproof?
Any iPhone user that has been in the Apple ecosystem for a few years knows that Apple is extremely committed to creating water-resistant devices. With each new generation of iPhones, they keep on adding more and more features that will protect your phone from splashes and spills.
This trend has continued with the iPhone 13, which has an IP68 rating.
What Does This Mean for You?
IP68 is the highest water resistance rating Apple currently offers for its iPhones. It means that your phone can be immersed in 1.5 meters of water for up to 30 minutes and still work just fine.
You can take your iPhone 13 to the beach or pool and not be worried about water damage. You can even make calls underwater if you want (although, we don’t recommend it).
What is also great about this rating is that it doesn’t matter how long your phone is submerged for. 30 minutes, 3 minutes, 30 seconds… as long as your phone is submerged for at least 1.5 meters, it will be fine when you pull it out.
What if I Drop my Phone in a Puddle?
If your phone falls into a large body of water like a lake or the sea and doesn’t land in 1.5 meters, don’t panic! The IP68 rating will protect your phone from a little bit of water.
Only a small amount of water will have no effect on your phone. However, if you drop it into an extremely large body of water or for too long, then you might run into some trouble. In those cases, just bring it to your local Apple store and they can take a look at it.
Also, if your phone falls into a puddle, don’t bother trying to take apart your phone. You can just wipe it off and you’ll be fine.
What if My Phone is Submerged in Salt Water?
As long as your iPhone 13 is submerged in freshwater or regular tap water, you don’t have to worry about any damage from salt or minerals that are commonly found in the sea. However, when you submerge it in a pool of saltwater (like what you would find at the beach), then your phone will see this saltwater as just another liquid.
This means that seawater can cause corrosion on the inside of your iPhone 13, which you definitely don’t want.
What About the Lightning Connector?
The iPhone 13 has a completely sealed Lightning port. This means that you don’t have to worry about water getting inside your phone from it being submerged in water. Just make sure the case is closed tight and there shouldn’t be any problems.
In fact, Apple now includes a warning message every time you plug your iPhone 13 into a charging port.
Apple acknowledges that they know there is water in the Lightning connector and therefore, it will not cause any damage to your phone.
Now you can take your iPhone 13 with you to the beach or pool and worry less about water damaging your phone. Most importantly, this rating means that you can use your iPhone 13 in places where you would never take your phone before.
