How to use Find My app to search for air tags near you

Apple’s AirTags have been a long awaited product. They’re competitively priced if you compare them to Tiles. AirTags work with the Find My app on your iPhone, they’re built with security and privacy in mind so an AirTag cannot be used to track someone and they’re great in helping you find lost items.

Find AirTags near you

AirTags are paired and tracked via Bluetooth. This means they have a fairly limited range when it comes to tracking. When an AirTag is out of range for your phone, it can still be found using the Find My app. The app uses a network created by other Apple devices nearby to help find the AirTag. It will essentially show up near another Apple device (if it’s in range), and will signal that it’s lost. You can add your contact information to a tag and when it is found by someone else, they will be able to return it to you.

Find My app to search AirTags

If you’ve attached an AirTag to your keys, or put one in your wallet you should be able to find them using the Find My app. This is of course assuming that both items are in your home (you haven’t lost them) but you’re not sure where in your home they are. It also assumes that the AirTag you want to find has already been set up before it was attached to an item.

  1. Open the Find My app on your iPhone (this is a stock app on iOS).
  2. Select the item that you’ve paired the AirTag you’re trying to find.
  3. Tap the find button i.e., the green arrow button.
  4. Follow the on-screen directions to find the AirTag.

An AirTag also has a built-in speaker and you can use it to remotely play a sound. The sound will allow you to find the AirTag without using the guided directions. You can follow the sound instead.

  1. Open the Find My app on your iPhone.
  2. Select the item that the AirTag is attached to.
  3. Tap the Play Sound button.
  4. Follow the sound to your AirTag.

Conclusion

When you first set up an AirTag, it’s a good idea to first figure out how to find an AirTag while you know where it is. Trying to find one later i.e., when its lost or when it’s attached to an important item that you need to find may prove difficult if you’re in a hurry and don’t have time to look for directions. You should also make sure you’ve added your contact information to the tag in case it is out of Bluetooth range.
