How to reset Face ID on iPhone

iPhones that support Face ID will ask you to set it up when you first set up your phone. You can always set it up later if you want. Face ID, once set, can always be reset. You can remove Face ID or set it up again if you’ve made changes to your appearance.

Reset Face ID on iPhone

You can reset Face ID on your iPhone any time. If it’s slow, resetting it can make it faster. It is generally able to recognize a person with and without glasses even if a second appearance has not been set up. That said, if you’ve started wearing glasses, dyed your hair, grown a beard or shaved it off, you should reset Face ID to make it more accurate.

To reset the Face ID on your phone, then follow these steps.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Face ID and Passcode.

Once you’ve reset Face ID, it will have to be set up again. If you restore your iPhone from a back up, the Face ID will not come back.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Go to Face ID and Passcode.
  3. Enter the PIN or Passcode for your phone.
  4. Tap Set up Face ID.
  5. Tap the Get Started button.
  6. Position your face within the frame and turn your head as guided by the phone.
  7. Allow both scans to complete.
  8. You can set up an alternate appearance by tapping ‘Set up Alternative appearance’.
  9. Wear your glasses or take them off and then set up the second appearance the same way as before.

Tips for setting up Face ID

Face ID is best set up with nothing covering your face e.g. a hat, a scarf, sunglasses etc. Make sure you set it up in good light. Face ID works in low light too but that doesn’t mean you should give it low light to work with when setting it up. That may slow it down when it scans your face.

Conclusion

Face ID is really smart; it will generally be able to recognize you even if you’ve dyed your hair or begun to wear glasses, or switched to contacts. You won’t notice that it has slowed down but given it’s a security measure for your phone, keeping it up to date is a good idea. Resetting it takes little time, and setting it up takes only a few minutes.
