How to fix Update Apple ID settings prompt on iPhone

An iPhone requires an Apple ID to work and there is no way around it. When you sign into an Apple ID, it allows you to use all sorts of features including, but not limited to, Find My, iCloud, and iMessages. You only have to sign in once and won’t be prompted to sign in again or to sign in periodically.

Update Apple ID settings prompt

If you’re seeing a prompt on your iPhone to verify your Apple ID settings, even though you’ve been able using the device for months or years without any problems, you’re experiencing a fairly common iOS bug.

Try signing in again with your Apple ID password and the prompt should go away. Make sure you’re entering the correct password. If you still see the prompt, try the fixes below.

Check iCloud service outage

If you’re being prompted to sign in again to all your Apple devices, check if there is an iCloud outage. If there is an on-going issue with any iCloud related service, signing in may not do the job. Wait for Apple to resolve the issue and then sign in.

Note: There is an on-going issue today, January 26, 2022.

Restart iPhone

If there is not iCloud or related outage, but you’re unable to sign in with your Apple ID, try restarting your iPhone.

  1. Press the volume up button on the side of your phone
  2. Press the volume down button on the side of your phone.
  3. Press and hold the Siri/Wake/Sleep button on the side of your phone.
  4. User the slider on the screen to turn the iPhone off.
  5. Once the phone is, turn it on by holding down the Siri/Wake/Sleep button.
  6. Go to Settings and sign in to your Apple ID.

Sign out and sign in again

If entering your password in the Apple ID verification prompt fails, sign out of your Apple ID and sign in again.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap your name/Apple ID at the top.
  3. Scroll to the bottom.
  4. Select the Sign out option.
  5. Once signed out, sign in again.
  6. The verification prompt shouldn’t appear.

Change internet connection

Try connecting to a different network. You can switch to your mobile network or if you’re using 3G/4G, try connecting to a WiFi network. If you’re using a VPN, disconnect it and then try signing in again.

Install iOS updates

While rare, a pending update may cause sign in issues. If you have an iOS update that is pending download or installation, install it.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Go to General>Software Update.
  3. Check for updates.
  4. Download and install the update.
  5. Sign in to your Apple ID after the update and the issue should be resolved.

Conclusion

The above solutions should fix the sign in problem. If the problem persists even after an iCloud outage has been resolved, you may want to restore your iPhone from a back up. This is the nuclear option and will obviously take quite a bit of time but it will fix the problem.
