How to clean iPhone charging port
An iPhone has some of the best hardware when it comes to smartphones. Newer iPhone models are now, somewhat waterproof though you shouldn’t take one for a swim. The hardware continues to improve every year however, it’s important to remember that it is still a computer and it needs to be maintained.
iPhone charging port
An iPhone carries Apple’s proprietary charging port; a lightning port. The technology is sound but a lightning port can be damaged if it’s isn’t cleaned properly. If dirt is allowed to build up in the port, it may result in slow charging, or no charging at all. On iPhones, the lightning port also doubles as the audio port. Problems with the charging port may also result in problems with audio.
Clean iPhone charging port
Dirt and lint can build up in the charging port overtime. It’s not going to be clogged within months but you should keep it clean.
Ideally, you should get a bright flashlight to help with the cleaning. The tool we’re going to use to clean the port is wooden toothpick. Make sure you do substitute it with something else like a pin, a cotton swab, or a something made of plastic.
Power your phone off; press the volume up, and then the power down button. Press and hold the Siri/Sleep/Wake button. Use the slider to turn the phone off.
If you can mount the phone, you’ll be able to shine light in the port more easily and you’ll have a free hand to clean the port.
Use the toothpick to gently remove dirt or lint that may have built up in the port. Use the flashlight to see where you’re aiming with the toothpick. A toothpick is unlikely to damage the port but you shouldn’t just jam it inside blindly. If you see areas where there is dirt, aim for them.
Rust cannot be cleaned from a port. If you suspect the port has rusted, take the phone in for a repair. Do not use chemicals to clean it off.
Conclusion
If your iPhone hasn’t been charging or it’s been charging slowly, it’s possible the port needs cleaning. It’s also possible that the cable you’re using or the power outlet is damaged. Try to change it out as well if cleaning doesn’t do the job. If you’ve dropped your phone from a considerable height, something might have come loose in it. It’s best to take it in for a check if cleaning the port doesn’t fix the problem.
