Apply Live Voice Effects During Calls On iPhone With VoiceChanger
In movies portraying espionage and horror flicks, there is often the scene where a character calls someone using a phone that is capable of changing or at least masking the human voice. In the real world, such devices and software tools have been available for quite some time, but are mainly used for playing pranks. iPhone has a few voice changers of its own, but normally a voice changer has to be configured before making a call, and no changes can be made once you have started talking. VoiceChanger is a new Cydia tweak that allows users to mask their voice midway through a call. There are multiple effects available in VoiceChanger, and most of them are pretty fun to use.
VoiceChanger belongs to a genre of tweaks that has already given us great releases like AnonySend and SMSNinja. This tweak, however, is different as it offers changes in real time, something we haven’t seen in the past. VoiceChanger could have been perfect had it offered integration with the stock Phone app, but even in its current state, using the tweak is only mildly inconvenient. VoiceChanger has to be configured from the menu it adds to the stock Settings app. In addition to basic usage instructions, the tweak’s menu has just two functioning options. At the top of the screen, there is a disable/enable toggle. The real fun begins inside the ‘Voice Effect’ section though. By default, no effect is applied to your calls, and the selected option is ‘Normal – No Effect’. You don’t have to choose an effect right away, as VoiceChanger works even if you select an effect during a call. This can be done by hitting the Home button to exit the call interface, and heading to the VoiceChanger section of the Settings app. Following are the effects available in the tweak at present.
- Dark Lord
- Tenoro
- Smurf
- Rumplestiltskin
Some of these effects (like the Dark Lord) one, make it a bit tough for the person on the other to understand what you are saying, but if you don’t have something really important to say, the tradeoff might not be too bad.
VoiceChanger suffers from a few shortcomings. For one thing, it only works with iPhone 4S and iPhone 5. Even on the 4S, the tweak only plays nice with calls that are made over the speaker, and not in normal mode. Since VoiceChanger is the first tweak of its kind though, you have to make some allowances. It costs $2.99 and can be found in the BigBoss repo of the Cydia store.
