How to Spawn Villagers in Minecraft

So you’ve built a beautiful and immersive Minecraft world for yourself. It is a stack representation of your dream city or home. It even has an underground basement you’ve always wanted, the pool too.

But it’s just you. Each day, you craft items, build structures, ride horses, fish, eat, sleep, etc. Now you want to get out of this loop of boredom. You want to trade and interact with people in the game. That’s where villagers come in.

Having villagers around makes your village appear crowded and lively. They are passive mobs who lonely exist to work, breed, and interact.

Interestingly, there are three ways to spawn or get villagers into your Minecraft world. You can generate them naturally, convert a zombie, or summon them from scratch. Let’s go over each method.

Summon villagers with game command

Minecraft allows players to summon villagers to a specific location with a command. But you need to turn on cheat mode for the command to work.

To summon a villager with the command, follow these steps:

  • Pop up the game chat by tapping “T” on PC/Java
  • Type /summon villager

This function will summon a villager to your current location. But if you want the villager to spawn in a specific spot on the map;

  • Types “/summon Villager [x] [y] [z]”

XYZ are coordinates of a specific location on the map. For example, you can replace them with absolute coordinates (or numbers) like 117 56 287.

On PlayStation 4, input the following command to spawn a villager:

  • /summon villager [spawnPos] [spawnEvent] [nameTag]

Note that spawnPos is the coordinate, and you have to specify it. The spawnEvent is the title of any event you want the villager to participate in; this is optional, though. Lastly, nameTag is any name you wish to give the villager, and it will appear as a name tag above the villager.

The summon command is available on Java and all of the Bedrock editions; that is:

  • Pocket Edition (PE) Pocket Edition (PE) v.0.16.0
  • Xbox One Xbox One v.1.2

Repopulate your village with naturally generated villagers

Another way to spawn villagers in Minecraft is to attract naturally generated villagers. Naturally generated villagers are found in NPC villages. So the first thing you want to do is build a village and make available enough apartments and beds, then locate NPC villages and return at least two villagers.

The truth, however, is that there is no gentlemanly method to return a villager; you basically have to kidnap them. You need to visit an NPC village with a body of water close by, shove a villager into the boat, and drive them off to your village. Then destroy the boat, allowing the villager to move into the village.

Provided that a villager finds good shelter, work, and food in your village, they will attract other villagers and start breeding.

Cure a zombie villager

When a normal villager is infected, they become zombies. But that’s not the end of their life. If you cure a zombie villager, it will become a healthy villager again and help you repopulate your village.

To cure a zombie villager, you need two ingredients: a Golden Apple and a Potion of Weakness. The great advantage of this method is that a cured zombie villager will still remember his job and how to trade, so they are valuable assets if you can convert them.
