How to Craft an Axe in Animal Crossing
To get wood in New Horizons, you’ll need a flimsy axe first. The flimsy axe is the weakest of all axes in the game and is primarily ideal for chopping off wood pieces. If it’s your first time, you’ll need to receive the DIY recipe to craft a flimsy axe. Otherwise, You can just purchase one from the store to save time.
To get the DIY Recipe for a flimsy axe, head over to the Resident Services building and speak to Tom Nook.
You’ll need to hand him some fish or bug, and he’ll give you the DIY Recipe for a flimsy axe in return. There’s no stipulated amount of fish or bugs to provide him with, so just go in there and turn in whatever you have.
Once you’ve received the DIY Recipe, you can take the required items (a stone and five tree branches) to the DIY workbench and craft a flimsy axe from them.
You can get tree branches by shaking trees on your island and collecting the droppings. On the other hand, you can get stones by hitting rocks on your island with a shovel.
How to Get Wood in Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Now that you have a flimsy axe, the next action is to collect pieces of wood with it. You can get wood from any tree on your island except bamboo plants.
However, there’s no guarantee that you’ll get wood from hitting a specific tree. This aspect of the game is randomized, so you can get one of hardwood, softwood, or wood. Also, each tree on your island can only produce droppings three times a day.

- Equip the flimsy axe from earlier
- Locate a tree and stand in front of it
- Press the A button on your Switch to hit the tree with your axe
