Does Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 Have a Story Mode?

Every ardent lover of the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater franchise would instantly get nostalgic when they set on the substrate in the new iteration of the game. The soundtrack and gameplay evoke a feeling only OG fans of the series can relate to.

With Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 being a remastered version of the classic games on PlayStation 1 and a host of handheld consoles, you’d expect the developers Vicarious Visions to have developed the various campaigns in the game around a story mode to spice things up and give OG fans something special.

This begs the question, Does Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 Have a Story Mode?

Not quite! Instead, you get a lengthy campaign mode that takes you across various locations and tasks you with different, intense challenges to complete. The campaign, albeit lengthy, progresses at a relatively slow rate, and you can consider this as a way to create and shape your own story like a pro skater in the virtual world.

Speaking of the campaign locations, there are 19 in total, and I like that you’re required to complete at least 80% of the challenges in a previous location before you can proceed to the next. And don’t go into any of these maps thinking you can breeze through them. They are intense with cleverly placed obstacles across the substrates and terrains.

Interestingly, the objectives you’re required to complete in each location vary, from attaining a foreordained score to collecting various items scattered across the maps. You’ll never get bored with any of the 19 maps. And I dare say this should make up for the lack of a story mode in the game.

What About a Multiplayer Mode?

Thankfully, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 has a multiplayer mode. Like the classic games on PlayStation and Nintendo, there’s local multiplayer, but there’s more: you can also glide across obstacles and terrains with friends online.

Let’s face it, online multiplayer has been a thing in the past decade, with players of different AAA titles having a preference for it over single-player campaign modes. As some would say, “Single-player games are scripted and repetitive.”

While I don’t subscribe to this notion entirely, we can’t deny that online multiplayer modes pack a punch, and it’s where most players head over to catch all the fun in a game.

Cross-Platforming on Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2

If there’s any feature I’d give anything to see in this game, it certainly is this one. The joy of playing against players from other platforms cannot be rivaled. Unfortunately, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 doesn’t support cross-platforming, thus compelling you to play against players within the confines of your console only.

This is disappointing, knowing the game is available on every platform you can think of; from current and past-gen Xbox and PlayStation to Microsoft Windows and Nintendo Switch.

Final Notes

While Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater doesn’t have a story mode, the game makes up for this dereliction in its rich campaign and multifaceted multiplayer option. Heck, it’s even selling at one-third of its launch price on Steam and PS Store, so there’s no harm in trying.
