Borderlands 4 Release Date: Everything We Know So Far
The Borderlands game franchise has been a fan favorite since 2009, and it’s still going strong! It was actually my first gaming experience that wasn’t on an old-school original NES console, so I’m particularly excited for Borderlands 4, as the games were my introduction into the world of PlayStation.
That’s right, a new game is on the horizon, and you can bet I’ll be ready to pounce when it becomes available. There’s still a lot we don’t know yet — for now, we’ll cover what has been revealed, the theoretical Borderlands 4 release date, compatible platforms, and other details that have been released.
Check out the official teaser trailer below:
Borderlands 4 Release Date Speculation
When is Borderlands 4 coming out? The likelihood is fall of 2025, but we don’t know for certain. Take-Two Games has said it will be released within their 2026 Fiscal Year, which starts October 1st, 2025. Theoretically, the release date could be anytime between October 2025 and the rest of that year, barring any delays.
What platforms will Borderlands 4 be released on?
Will Borderlands 4 release on Steam? Apparently so, as the game is already on the wish lists for several platforms. It should launch on PS5, Xbox Series, PC, the Epic Game Store, and Steam.
What to Expect for Borderlands 4
There is still a lot we don’t know about B4, but there are some things we can say with confidence, such as that it will definitely be another looter-shooter with RPG elements. Here are some of the other aspects to look forward to in the coming game.
New Vault Hunter Characters
In the official game developer panel at PAX West 2024, the devs announced there would be 4 brand-new vault hunters to play. This is no surprise, as the previous games have constantly come up with unique characters for gamers to explore. While we don’t have official details yet, the devs said they tried to maintain the balance of complex characters combined with first-person shooter and RPG elements.
Historically, there have been a lot of different storytelling techniques to the various games in the franchise. The first being the most simplistic and really centering around the characters, whereas the other games had higher stakes and broader storyline-based interactions.
According to the narrative director, Same Winkler, “With Borderlands 4, we want to bring it back to the player. We want to make sure that the player and the Vault Hunters are the central characters of our story.” It sounds like it will have a similar vibe as the first game, meaning a return to the players being the biggest drivers of the plot.
Get Ready For More High-Tech Settings
Also discussed on the developer panel, the new game gives the designers a chance to work with a more futuristic setting. While it seems to take place in the same time-period as Borderlands 3, it will not be on the planet of Pandora.
Pandora is well known for its mix of futuristic weapons mixed with a very Mad Max-ish post-apocalyptic feel. With B4 being set on a new planet, it gives the devs a chance to give us a different look at the future, including more color and more technology.
New Non-Player Characters
Another aspect to look forward to, is more completely new NPCs. The other games had many returning faces, such as Claptrap, Lilith, Tiny Tina, and other favorites. Whether they will make appearances in the new game remains to be seen (I hope so!), but because it is an entirely new planet, devs have said to expect plenty of new characters, along with a “couple of familiar ones.”
They also said that the storylines of these characters will be shown more clearly and concisely in comparison to other games, where the sheer history and number of NPCs could potentially get overwhelming.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who is developing Borderlands 4?
Take-Two Interactive Software, a very well-respected entertainment developer, has teamed up with Gearbox, the game developers who have made all the Borderlands titles. In fact, Take-Two acquired Gearbox this year (2024), and the two companies have worked together for quite some time already. 2K, a publishing label owned by Take-Two, will also be involved.
Will Borderlands 4 be cross-platform?
It does seem like B4 will be cross-platform. The Steam wish list shows the game as cross-platform and multiplayer. Whether this will be available on the initial release or a feature added later, is still uncertain.
Where is Borderlands 4 set?
Just as we don’t yet know the Borderlands 4 release date, we also don’t know much about the planet the new game will take place on. Just that it isn’t Pandora, for once. It will feature new characters (both non-players and vault hunters) and have a more technologically advanced setting that will showcase more colorful and futuristic visuals. Between the teaser trailer and the concept art that was officially released, it looks like it’s going to be gorgeous.
