Atomfall Game – The Survival Game You Didn’t Know You Needed
Atomfall Game is the upcoming game from British video game developer, Rebellion Developments. It’s a survival action game, set five years after the 1957 Windscale fire, the nuclear disaster that turned Northern England into a quarantine zone. As a first-person alternate history game revolving around radiation exclusion zones, many people compare the game to popular post-apocalyptic series such as S.T.A.L.K.R. and Fallout. However, the Atomfall game has enough distinct features to make it stand on its own.
First, the game’s unique setting (not to mention, the British accents of the characters) is something that we don’t see very often in games of this genre. Moreover, and contrary to what you might expect from a nuclear disaster zone, Atomfall’s environment includes lush valleys, green hills, and colorful rural villages. So, no matter how much danger awaits players in the various Atomfall locations, it still seems lively.
Players will take control of an amnesic person who is looking for answers about what actually happened. This setting sees players exploring the Lake District of Northern England, during and after the biggest nuclear accident in the UK’s history. Players have to deal with cult members, fight against rogue military agents, and try to disarm robots that are created during British Atomic research. To make things more interesting, and add more flavor of fiction to the mix, just like in Fallout — there are also mutated creatures that can kill you within seconds.
What Inspired the Atomfall Game? A Look at Its Major Influences
As a first-person action game, Atomfall has been inspired by different games, movies, and TV series. However, the first thing people think about when they see the Atomfall game is Fallout. Ben Fisher, associate head of design at Rebellion, had a fascinating response to this comparison: “In some respects, yes. In some respects, no, It’s a much denser experience. One of our reference points has been Fallout: New Vegas in that it’s a more concentrated experience than, say, Fallout 3 and 4, and largely builds one story that’s interconnected and has layers that are influenced by the choices the player makes.”
Atomfall game consists of multiple interconnected zones. So, it’s not an open-world game like Fallout is. Fisher mentioned that the Bioshock and Metro series also influenced the game’s design. According to the development team, Atomfall’s other inspirations include:
- Children of Men (The dystopian movie from 2006)
- The Prisoner (The British TV series from the 1960s)
- The Quatermass Experiment
- Doctor Who
- The Wicker Man
- The Day of the Triffids
How It Was Made: From Development to Execution
The developers of the game are the same team behind the popular tactical shooter, Sniper Elite. Due to the team’s experience in creating interconnected smaller maps, Atomfall has a similar structure to the modern Sniper Elite games. That’s one of the reasons why stealth is such a huge part of the game. However, in this game, players have the option to finish levels without killing any enemy. For the offensive approach, players can collect different resources to craft various weapons and kill enemies. But, don’t forget that it is also a survival game, and ammunition is bound to be scarce.
In the latest Trailer, we can see that the protagonist uses firearms, a bow, melee weapons, a flashlight, and hand-to-hand combat to progress through the game. Furthermore, players can talk to different NPCs and select various dialogue options to get new objectives. Take note that Atomfall steam page warns about mature content: “This Game may contain content not appropriate for all ages, or may not be appropriate for viewing at work: Frequent Violence or Gore, General Mature Content”.
